KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Thalia Playford scored a pair of goals off the bench as Western Michigan University posted a 4-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Sept. 25). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the WMU Soccer Complex.
The win lifts the Broncos to 4-4-1 on the season, and Western is now 2-0-0 in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 5-5-0 and 1-1-0, respectively.
Stephanie Johnson added a goal and two assists for the Broncos, while Mandi Marsh scored the opening goal of the match to give the hosts the only marker they would need.
BGSU actually held advantages of 20-19 in shots and 8-6 in shots on goal, but WMU goalkeeper Kate Perz was equal to the task, with eight saves.
The Broncos committed 23 fouls to the Falcons' six, and Western had all three yellow cards in the match, with two being issued to individuals on the WMU bench.
"MAC wins are hard to come by, especially on the road," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "But, the result today was a wasted opportunity for us.
"We gift-wrapped all four goals for them, and our defensive mistakes and lack of focus proved too much to overcome. We had just as many chances as they did -- we had more shots, more corner kicks (4-3) and more shots on goal -- but the difference was that we couldn't convert.
"It was disappointing in that they were needless goals -- we didn't have to give them away. We played better for most of the second half, but by then it was too late."
The Falcons will return home to prepare for another two-match road trip next weekend. BGSU will hit the road to face Ball State on Friday (Sept. 30) before meeting Miami on Sunday (Oct. 2) to conclude a five-match road swing.
