BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, having split a pair of matches on the road to open the Mid-American Conference schedule last weekend, faces a pair of teams that fared the same ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards (5-5-0, 1-1-0 MAC), one of eight 1-1 MAC teams, will meet Ball State University in Friday (Sept. 30) action in Muncie, Ind. ... the match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. locally (4:00 p.m. Eastern) at the Ball State Soccer Field ... then, the Brown and Orange will conclude a five-match road swing with Sunday's (Oct. 2) match against Miami University ... kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Miami Soccer Field.
LAST WEEKEND
The Falcons split a pair of road matches to open MAC play ... on Friday (Sept. 23), BGSU downed Northern Illinois by a 3-1 count, with senior Britt Anderson scoring twice and classmate Julie Trundle tying the school record with three assists ... then, on Sunday (Sept. 25), Western Michigan took a three-goal halftime lead en route to a 4-0 win over the Falcons.
TRUNDLE TIES ASSIST RECORD
One week after breaking a BGSU assists record, senior Julie Trundle has tied another mark ... Trundle, who broke the school career record in the Cleveland State match (Sept. 16), tied the single-match record by assisting on all three Falcon goals in Friday's (Sept. 23) win at NIU ... she became the sixth player in school history to record three assists in a match, but the first to do so in a MAC contest, and also the first to do so in a road match ... Trundle now has a team-high six assists on the season, and has increased her school-record career total to 29 ... the list of three-assist games in school history ...
Assists -- Player (Opponent, Date) 3 -- Julie Trundle (at Northern Illinois, 9/23/05) 3 -- Britt Anderson (vs. Duquesne, 8/27/04) 3 -- Jill Conover (vs. Youngstown State, 10/3/01) 3 -- Nikki Pucillo (vs. Youngstown State, 10/3/01) 3 -- Kerry McKee (vs. Youngstown State, 11/2/97) 3 -- Paige Suhay (vs. Youngstown State, 11/2/97)
LEADERS OF THE MAC
Falcon players are at or near the top of a number of MAC lists ... senior Samantha Meister leads the league in points (12) and is tied for the MAC lead in both goals (five) and goals per match (0.50) ... senior Britt Anderson (1.25) and Meister (1.20) rank one-two in points per match ... Anderson is tied for first in goals per match and match-winning goals (two), and is second in the league in points (10) and tied for second in goals (four) ... senior Julie Trundle leads the MAC in both assists (six) and assists per match (0.60).
DOUBLE YOUR FUN
For the second consecutive Friday, senior Britt Anderson had a multiple-goal match ... before Sept. 16, Anderson had never scored two goals in a match, but she then did so twice in an eight-day span ... the Fort Collins, Colo., native found the back of the net two times in the Falcons' 6-0 win over Cleveland State ... then, one week later, she repeated the feat in BG's 3-1 win at Northern Illinois ... Anderson now has 15 career goals, good for sixth in school history.
MEISTER MAKES HER MARK
Senior Samantha Meister scored the Falcons' first goal in the win at Northern Illinois ... the goal was her team-high fifth of the season and the 25th of her career ... Meister ranks second in school history on the career goals list ... she now has 63 career points, just two shy of moving into a tie for second place on that BGSU list ... Meister has a team-best 12 points this season after recording eight points during all of 2004.
HEAD COACH Andy Richards
Andy Richards is in his sixth season as a collegiate head coach, all with the Falcons ... he picked up his 50th career win on Sept. 11, and now has an overall record of 52-57-10, including a MAC Tournament mark of 7-3-1 ... Richards has led BGSU to the four finest seasons in school history over his first five years ... he has guided the Falcons to the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament on four occasions, to the championship match three times, and, in 2004, to the first league tourney title and NCAA Tournament berth in school history ... Eric Golz is in his second season with the program, and his first as the top assistant.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU enters the weekend with an overall record of 5-5-0 and a MAC ledger of 1-1-0 ... after allowing a total of eight goals in two home losses to start the season (4-1 to Oakland, 4-0 vs. Wright State), the Falcons surrendered just six goals in the next seven matches, going 5-2 in that span, before the 4-0 loss at Western Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 25) ... BG's non-conference victories came over Northern Arizona (2-1), Boise State (1-0), Eastern Illinois (2-1 in overtime) and Cleveland State (6-0) ... senior Samantha Meister leads the Falcons with five goals and 12 points on the season, while classmate Britt Anderson is right behind, with four goals and 10 points ... another senior, Julie Trundle, has a goal, a team-best six assists and eight points, while freshman Kristin McDonald and senior Leah Eggleton have four points apiece ... senior Ali Shingler has started all 10 matches this season, and has 53 saves and a 1.87 goals-against average ... BG returned 15 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's MAC Tournament championship team ... the group of returnees includes no fewer than nine seniors, the most in school history ... the senior class is looking to become the first class in school history to qualify for the MAC Tournament in four consecutive seasons ... Shingler, the lone returning 'keeper, played nearly 84 percent of the minutes in 2004 ... BGSU's incoming recruiting class was rated tops in the MAC by Soccer Buzz.
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
Ball State enters the BGSU match with the MAC's best overall record, at 8-2-0, and the Cardinals are ranked 13th in the Great Lakes Region by Soccer Buzz this week, the only league team listed ... BSU, like BGSU, is 1-1 in the MAC ... after winning at Kent State, 2-0, on Friday (Sept. 23), the Cards lost a 1-0 decision at Buffalo Sunday (Sept. 25) to snap a six-match winning streak ... the team's only other loss also came by a 1-0 score, at home vs. Illinois State ... freshman Emily Rein leads a balanced scoring attack with five goals and 10 points, while senior Lindsay Wiltshire has nine points and sophomore Sarah Leibel eight ... both Wiltshire and Leibel have three goals on the year, and Wiltshire is tied for the team lead with three assists ... junior goalkeeper Alison Becker has played in all 10 matches, and has 34 saves and a miniscule 0.62 goals-against average ... the Cardinals went 10-3-7 overall last fall, tying for fifth in the MAC with 20 points on a 5-2-5 league record ... a total of 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, returned for head coach Ron Rainey, who is 63-51-15 in his seventh year in Muncie ... Rainey has a record of 83-64-19 in his ninth year as a collegiate head coach.
Miami enters the weekend with an overall record of 3-4-0 and a 1-1 MAC slate ... the RedHawks, who have played just one home match to date, will host Toledo on Friday before meeting the Falcons two days later ... that home match was a 1-0 win over nationally-ranked Michigan ... last weekend, the 'Hawks split a pair of road matches, with a 2-0 win at Buffalo, but a 4-1 loss at Kent State ... individually, junior Kathleen Vistica has a team-high five points, while sophomore Lindy Slinger has two goals to tie Vistica for the MU lead ... the goalkeeping duo of senior Leigh Terry and junior Shannon Chew has been rotating halves all season to date, with each playing exactly 315 minutes ... Terry has 27 saves and a 1.14 GAA, while Chew has made 20 stops and has a GAA of 1.71 ... a total of 13 letterwinners, including nine starters, are back from last year's 8-9-2 squad ... that team finished with a 6-4-2 MAC mark, tying for fifth in the league ... head coach Bobby Kramig has a record of 94-64-9 in his ninth year as the RedHawks' head women's coach ... he is 107-67-11 in his 10th season as a women's collegiate head coach.
The Falcons trail Ball State, 3-2-1, in the all-time series between the teams ... last season, the visiting Cardinals picked up a 2-1 win over the Falcons (Oct. 10, 2004) ... Britt Anderson scored the Falcons' lone goal of that match ... two years ago, in the teams' last meeting in Muncie, the Brown and Orange came away with a 2-0 win on a rainy Friday (Oct. 3, 2003), with Samantha Meister scoring a goal and Ali Shingler making six saves for the shutout ... the teams are 1-1-1 all-time in meetings at the Ball State Soccer Field ... the road team has won each of the last three overall matchups.
The Falcons also trail the series with Miami, by an 8-2 margin ... but, BG has won each of the last two meetings, including last season's 2-0 home win (Oct. 8, 2004) ... Gina Rossi scored the opening goal of that match, while Shingler was not called upon to make a save in that shutout win ... the Falcons are 1-4 in road matches vs. the RedHawks, but that win came in the team's last trip to the Miami Soccer field ... in that match (Oct. 5, 2003), the Falcons trailed, 2-0, with under 25 minutes to play, but posted a 3-2 win as Julie Trundle bent a corner kick into the net with 5:26 left in the second half.
