KENT, Ohio - Sophomore Corbie Yee scored in overtime to cap off a mad scramble, giving the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Kent State University Friday afternoon (Oct. 13). The Mid-American Conference match was held at a windy Kent State Soccer Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-8-0 overall, and BGSU is now 4-3-0 in MAC play. The host Golden Flashes drop to 7-7-1 and 4-3-0, respectively.
Lindsay Carter, the Falcons' lone senior, picked up the assist on Yee's goal.
The wind, with gusts of nearly 40 miles per hour that nearly toppled the press tent between the team benches on several occasions, obviously played havoc with the offensive efforts of both teams. The Falcons and Flashes battled through 90 scoreless minutes of regulation time.
The Falcons' winning play began with a corner kick by Carter. The ball was played into the penalty area, where several players from each team had a poke at it.
Carter took a shot that was blocked by a KSU defender, and Yee then deposited the ball across the goal line to end the scrum in the box at the 95:25 mark and give the Falcons the win.
The Flashes had 22 total shot attempts to the Falcons' 13 on the day, and KSU held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. BGSU sophomore Christy Zabek, however, made seven saves to pick up the shutout. That save total included a leaping effort to deflect a Lisa Kurz shot over the crossbar in the final three minutes of regulation.
"There are times in the game of soccer when you just have to defend and weather the storm when another team is applying pressure," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "Then, hopefully, during your period of advantage, you can score a goal.
"Today, we had long periods of stout defense, and it was an effort of Herculean proportions by all of our defenders, from Christy Zabek in goal to the back line to the midfielders and the forwards. We defended very well against a Kent team that threw a lot of offense at us.
"We are very pleased, of course, with the win. We have had some games this year where we haven't defended very well, or we have given in to pressure. This day was extremely pleasing because we defended very well, and we took our chance when it came.
"Corbie's goal was a result of determination and purposeful effort, rather than of skill and guile. But, sometimes that is what is needed to win a game, and we are very happy to get another MAC win. Kent State is a very good team, particularly on their own field, and I have tremendous admiration for the effort put forth by our team to get the win today.
"Credit should go to Christy, as well as to Corbie and our team defensive effort. Christy had several high-quality saves to earn her shutout."
The Falcons return to action on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 15), facing the University at Buffalo. More information on that game is below.
SCHEDULE NOTE
According to the University at Buffalo's athletics web site, the Falcons' Sunday (Oct. 15) game against the Bulls has been moved to Kent State due to the record-breaking snowfall in western New York that has resulted in a state of emergency being declared over the region. The BGSU-UB game is now scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start, according to the web site.

* Carter's game-winning assist was her second this season and the third of her BGSU career ... all three have come in 1-0 wins, with each of this year's game-winning assists occurring in overtime ... her first career GWA came vs. Akron on Oct. 9, 2005, and she had the primary assist on Kayleigh Zajaros' OT goal in last month's home win over Xavier (Sept. 1).
