ATHENS, Ohio - Host Ohio University scored three times in a span of just over 16 minutes in the first half to down the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, 3-0, Friday afternoon (Oct. 6). The Mid-American Conference game was held at OU's Chessa Field.
With the win, the host Bobcats improve to 6-6-0 overall and 4-1-0 in MAC play, while the Falcons drop to 6-7-0 and 3-2-0, respectively.
Ohio goalkeepers Dominique Wright and Jess MacLean combined for the shutout, and Courtney Mink's goal at the 15:19 mark was all the scoring the Bobcats would need in the win. Mink scored her second goal in as many games, taking a pass from Tiffany Horvath and lofting it over Falcon junior 'keeper Tiffany Hansen and into the net.
Horvath got a goal of her own in the 29th minute, scoring an unassisted tally to double the home team's lead. Just 3:03 later, the Bobcats' Amy Lower completed the scoring, off of a Lindsey Price feed.
The teams played scoreless soccer for the final 58-plus minutes, but for the Falcons, the damage had been done.
Wright played 80:41 in goal, making one save to earn the win. MacLean played the final 9:19 of the game and did not face a shot on goal.
For the Falcons, Hansen played the first half, making one save. Sophomore Christy Zabek played the second half in net, and did not face a shot on goal from the Bobcats.
Ohio held an 8-3 advantage in shots, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
"Any coach, player or fan of the Mid-American Conference is very aware that there is extreme parity in our conference," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "As a result, you have to be ready to compete every single game. Otherwise, you're going to quickly come unstuck.
"I think we learned as a program today that, not only must we be 'on' for every game, we've got to be 'on' for every minute of every game. We conceded three goals in 16 minutes today, and that was the game.
"Credit must go to Ohio, as they only had four shots on goal the entire game, and scored off three of them, so I'm sure they're very happy with the clinical nature of their finishing.
"The second half was a non-event, because the result was determined by then. I give credit to our young women, because they did indeed try very hard to get back into the game, but it was just too little, too late. Now we need to try to rebound on Sunday and see if we can get a split out of this weekend's tough road trip. We have learned a lesson today, and hopefully, we will act upon it."
The Falcons will look to do just that on Sunday (Oct. 8), heading to the Rubber City to face the University of Akron. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. at UA's Lee Jackson Field.
