AKRON, Ohio - The host University of Akron scored early and late in the first half en route to a 2-1 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Oct. 8). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Lee Jackson Field.
The win lifts the Zips' records to 9-4-0 overall and 2-4-0 in MAC play, while the Falcons drop to 6-8-0 and 3-3-0, respectively.
Sophomore Brianne Eisenhard scored the lone goal for the Falcons, with junior Danielle Cygan assisting on the play.
The Zips got on the board early in the day, when Haja Dumbuya poked a loose ball past Falcon junior Tiffany Hansen with 3:42 elapsed.
The Falcons struck right back, as Eisenhard deposited Cygan's left-side cross past UA 'keeper Krystin Wilson at the 10:43 mark. The goal was Eisenhard's second of the season, while Cygan picked up her team-leading third assist.
The Zips, however, scored what would prove to be the game-winner with 6:48 left before halftime, as Christine Vacha scored on a breakaway.
The match statistics were relatively even, as the Falcons had a narrow 7-6 advantage in shot attempts, but UA had four shots on goal to BG's two. Hansen made two saves in 45 minutes of work, while sophomore Christy Zabek worked a scoreless second half in net and did not face a shot on goal.
Wilson picked up the complete-game win for the hosts, making one save. Each team had a total of just one shot attempt in the entire second half.
The win enabled Akron, a sixth-year program, to set a new single-season record for wins.
The Falcons continue a four-game road stretch next weekend, with matches at Kent State Friday (Oct. 13) and Buffalo Sunday (Oct. 15). The two contests mark BGSU's final road games of the season.
NOTES
* The game marked Akron's first-ever win over the Falcons ... BGSU had held a 5-0-0 series lead prior to Sunday.
* Sophomore Brianne Eisenhard's goal was the second of her career, and her second in as many Sundays ... Eisenhard scored her first collegiate goal a week ago (Oct. 1) in a home win over Miami.
* Junior Danielle Cygan's assist was her third of the season, most on the Falcons ... Cygan also leads the team with seven points in 2006.
* Sophomore goalkeeper Christy Zabek has yet to allow a goal in her collegiate career ... Zabek has played a total of 307:45 in nine career contests without allowing a goal ... this year, she has seen action in six games, playing 241:26 without ever having to fish a ball out of the back of the net.
* The game, BGSU's 14th of the season, was only the second 2006 contest in which one team did not post a shutout ... the Falcons have been the winning team in six shutouts and the losing team in six ... the only other non-shutout game this year to date also was a 2-1 Falcon loss, vs. Michigan State on Sept. 15.
