BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) -
BGSU HEAD COACH Curt Miller
"I am very pleased with the win today against a very talented team in Robert Morris. They are in the top-25 in the nation in scoring. I thought we did a very good job today with our game plan, playing disciplined, smart basketball -- BG style of basketball -- and we did not let Robert Morris dictate the style of today's game."
"I am proud that we were able to build the lead to 28 points in the second half, because it allowed us to play our entire roster some quality minutes. With this tough stretch of four games (in nine days), it is good to have the ability to play the entire roster, and save some minutes for our starters with the start of MAC play coming up."
(On BGSU limiting RMU's offensive rebounds)
"That was a point of emphasis for us in our preparation. We had three main goals, but it all came back to one key point. We needed to make them earn every single point that they got, because they are so explosive offensively. One of those areas was to eliminate their offensive rebounds. They have explosive athletes, and they are a very good offensive rebounding team. They average nearly 18 a game, and they went to halftime with only two offensive rebounds, and ended the game with less than 10. That was just an outstanding rebounding effort by our kids today."
"The other goals were to avoid turnovers that would lead to easy points in transition for them -- that was very well done by our team, as we only had 10 turnovers for the game, and that was with everyone on our team playing. Our final goal was transition points. You can see how quickly they can score. They had 35 points in the last nine minutes of the game; that's what they are capable of doing. I know people may have wanted to see some of our younger kids in the game a little earlier, but I'm telling you, that's what Robert Morris can do offensively. We did a good job of limiting their transition points in the first 30 minutes today."
"I think we did an excellent job of taking what the defense gave us today. In the first half, we had some mismatches on switching (defenders) on our ball screens, and we were able to go at some smaller kids who were guarding our post players inside. In the second half, they adjusted, so we had to adjust. Our kids did an excellent job of realizing what they were giving us and taking advantage of it."
(Do you feel that your team is ready for the start of MAC play?)
"I am ecstatic with our start. You couldn't have paid me to believe that we could have been 10-2 with this schedule. That is just a credit to the unbelievable warriors that I get to coach every day. I am very excited with where we are right now. But, it means absolutely nothing tomorrow, when we start to prepare for Akron. We are excited to get going, to start a new season. We will break the season down into three mini-seasons (five games vs. East Division opponents, six games vs. the West Division teams, and five more games vs. the East), and we know we know how much we will be hunted. We will walk into hostile territory right off the bat. Akron has a new coach in Jodi Kest, and she has them playing very well, with six wins in a row. I worked with Jodi for a year when we were both at Cleveland State, and she is just a phenomenal coach. We are excited to get going in the MAC, but we know we will have to be ready every game. Akron is on an outstanding roll, but it is not a surprise to me at all, because their coach is that good."
BGSU SENIOR Carin Horne
(On the Falcons' limiting RMU's offensive rebounding total to nine)
"That was a key to winning the game. A big part of our offense comes from getting (defensive) rebounds and pushing the ball down the court. We knew we just had to limit their rebounding as much as possible, box out and do what we could do to get to the boards."
(What are you doing to get such high-percentage shots right now?)
"Everyone on our team is basically a scorer. We tried to get the ball to the open person. We drive, penetrate and kick; that's what we live off of. Once we find someone open, we just hope and pray that it goes in."
BGSU SENIOR Liz Honegger
"Coach Miller really emphasized their offensive rebounding talent coming into the game. For us to win the game, we knew that we would have to box out and try to limit their second chances at the offensive end."
"This was a good opportunity for all of our players to get in the game. We were up by a lot, but then they cut the lead and they were pressing the whole time. It was just a good experience for them to be on the floor in a pressure situation, and it will help us in the long run."
RMU COACH SAL BUSCAGLIA
(Opening statement)
"I've got to compliment the people of Curt Miller and Bowling Green. I've been in the game for 30 years, and the crowd support was outstanding, and that's what women's basketball needs. We can go play at some places (where the team is) ranked, and they don't always get the support that this community shows. This crowd was supportive from the opening tip, no matter what the score was, to the last possession. They were really into the game, and that's what women's basketball needs, people like this Bowling Green crowd and community. That's a reflection on Curt, the staff and the community. It was really nice to see."
(What did Bowling Green do to limit your offensive rebounding?)
'I thought they boxed out extremely well. I think they knew we are an athletic team and that we can get rebounds, and I think their defense causes them to get rebounds as well. They sagged in and forced us to hit the outside shot, and there were always four (BGSU) people in rebounding position around the basket. We have pretty good shooters, but their positioning on the floor and the effort that they gave enabled them to get a lot of rebounds. My team never gave up, though, we fought until the very end."
