BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green women's track program will open the outdoor portion of their 2006 schedule this Saturday. Head coach Scott Sehmann will take ten athletes to the Dr. Pepper Invitational in Waco, Texas, while assistant coach Cami Wells will take the rest of the athletes to the Dick Small Invitational in Defiance, Ohio.
Bowling Green is coming off a tenth place finish at the indoor championships, but return many strong athletes for the outdoor season and look to place higher than last year's tenth place finish.
Juniors Jessica White and Nicole Standback will be heading up the sprinting and hurdling crew. White and Standback had success in MAC competition this past indoor season. Standback finished her highest place in the 60-meter hurdles since her freshman year, finishing third. White also finished her highest place in the 60-meter dash, finished fifth.
Jamie Roflow and Stephanie Hillman are the two top distance runners for the Falcons. Roflow had a spectacular indoor season finishing third in the 5,000-meter run and fourth in the 3,000-meter run. During the 2005 outdoor season, Roflow finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and seventh in the 5,000-meter run at last year's MAC Championships. Teammate Hillman is the defending All-Ohio Champion in the 10,000-meter and also took seventh place in the same event at the MACs.
The Falcon throwers are coming off a very strong indoor season. Sophomore Whitney Hartman finished fourth in the hammer throw and eighth in the shot put. Hartman finished sixth at last year's outdoor championships in the hammer throw. Hartman also has the fourth best throw in school history and looks to be a strong force outdoors for the Falcons. Another strong arm for the Orange and Brown will be javelin thrower Andi Bunko. The junior has been a fierce competitor in MAC competition her last two years and should be no different in 2006. Hartman and Bunko will also be joined by Paris Bussey, a strong discus and shot-put thrower who threw a personal-best in the shot put indoors; Alyson Lee, a senior who has been a consistent javelin thrower over the past three seasons, and newcomer Takara Dunning.
The jumping crew, headed by junior Erica Wilson, look to improve upon years past. Wilson has been a strong competitor in each the long and high jump the past two seasons, both indoor and outdoor. 2006 should be no different for the outstanding jumper.
Field events for the Dr. Pepper Invitational begin at 9 a.m. on the campus of Baylor University. Running events will begin at 12:30.
The Dick Small Invitational will last all day on the campus of Defiance College.
