BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the second consecutive season, has seen the 2005 season come to an end ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards (14-7-2 [9-2-0 MAC]), for the second-straight year, advanced to the NCAA Championships and faced a Big Ten Conference foe, falling to Michigan State University by a 4-0 final ... the Falcons finished the year with an overall record of 14-7-2, and BGSU won the MAC's regular-season title with a 9-2-0 league ledger.
BEST. SEASON. EVER.
What would constitute the best season in school history? The most wins? Fewest losses? A sweep of the league regular-season and tournament championships? This year's BGSU team accomplished all of the aforementioned feats and more ... check out some of the accomplishments by the 2005 women's soccer Falcons ...

Michigan State erupted for four second-half goals, breaking open a scoreless game and giving the Spartans a 4-0 win over the Falcons in the opening round of the NCAA Championships at Notre Dame, Ind. (Nov. 11) ... the loss ended the Falcons' season with a record of 14-7-2, and also snapped the team's school-record 11-match unbeaten streak ... the four-goal margin of defeat could not have been more deceiving, as the Falcons dominated the first half of play ... even after the Spartans got on the board with an own goal early in the second half, it was a one-goal game until less than 20 minutes remained in the contest ... in the first half, the Falcons held the ball for the majority of the 45 minutes, and outshot MSU by a margin of 8-1, but could not put the ball past MSU goalkeeper Nicole Galas ... on the evening, the teams each had 14 shot attempts ... Galas had five saves to pick up the win ... BGSU senior goalie Ali Shingler made a total of four saves in the match, with the last save of her Falcon career a spectacular one, as she made a diving stop to rob a Spartan attacker of a goal in the final minute of play.
THANKS, SENIORS
The MSU match marked the final contest in the BGSU careers of nine seniors ... the nine-member senior class, the largest in school history, is comprised of Britt Anderson, Molly Bremen, Leah Eggleton, Samantha Meister, Megan Rapp, Natalie Sampiller, Ali Shingler (fifth-year senior), Julie Trundle and Ashley Wentzel.
FALCONS CELEBRATE SUCCESSFUL SEASON AT TEAM BANQUET
Seniors Britt Anderson, Molly Bremen and Ashley Wentzel each earned most valuable player awards as the women's soccer Falcons held their annual banquet on Feb. 18 ... Anderson was named the Falcons' MVP on offense, while Bremen was the team's MVP in the midfield ... Wentzel, chosen as the Falcons' MVP on defense, also earned the Leslie Dawley "Fighting Falcon" Award, given to the team member who, through words and actions, most accurately reflects the program's philosophy of 'Today I gave all that I have, for everything I left behind is gone forever' ... senior Leah Eggleton earned the team's "Hustle" Award for the third consecutive season, while freshman Corbie Yee was named the Falcons' most improved player ... the "Fighting Falcon" award winner is selected by the BGSU coaching staff, while the other five awards are the result of voting by the team members ... in addition to bestowing the aforementioned awards, the Falcons also handed out some other hardware at the banquet, as the team members received their MAC Championship rings.
ALI AN ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
Fifth-year senior Ali Shingler was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team ... Shingler, a First-Team selection, becomes the first student-athlete in the history of the program to earn such an honor ... Shingler started all 23 games for the Falcons in 2005, and set a school record with 14 wins ... she had a goals-against average of just 1.32 and tied the BG record with seven shutouts ... Shingler put together a school-record shutout streak of 432:19, anchoring a defense that posted four consecutive shutouts during the middle of the MAC schedule ... she ranks first or second on every goalkeeping list in BGSU history ... in the classroom, she maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average, with a dual major of biology and applied health science.
RICHARDS AGREES TO THREE-YEAR CONTRACT
In February of 2006, Bowling Green reached an agreement with Falcon women's soccer coach Andy Richards on a three-year contract ... the contract will run through June 30, 2009 ... Richards' new contract marks the first time in school history that a soccer coach has received a multi-year contract ... Richards completed his sixth season as BGSU's head coach in November, having guided the Falcons to the 2005 MAC regular-season and tournament titles ... the exploits of Richards and the Falcons can be seen throughout this release.
FALCONS EARN ALL-REGION HONORS
Several Falcons earned all region honors for their accomplishments in 2005 ... seniors Samantha Meister and Julie Trundle were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All-Great Lakes Region Team ... Meister earned second-team honors, while Trundle was named to the third team ... the two players are just the second and third Falcons to be selected to the team (Erika Flanders was a third-team pick in 2002) ... Meister was also named to the all-region second team by Soccer Buzz ... Corbee Yee was chosen to the region's All-Freshman Team by that publication, while head coach Andy Richards was the runner-up for Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year ... there are 55 schools in the Great Lakes Region.
FALCONS MAKE THE ALL-OHIO LIST, TOO
Four BGSU women's soccer seniors were named to the 2005 All-Ohio Team by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association ... Samantha Meister and Julie Trundle earned first-team honors on the Division I and II squad, while Britt Anderson was named to the second team and Ali Shingler garnered honorable mention ... Meister was the 'Midfielder of the Year,' as the top vote-getter among all players at that position ... BGSU had two first-team honorees for the first time in history ... the Falcons' total of four players named to this year's team tied for the most in BG annals.
MUCH IMPROVED
The Falcons were listed as one of the most improved teams in the nation ... BGSU tied for 24th on the list, released by the NCAA, with an improvement of 4.5 games ... the Falcons went 14-7-2 in 2005 after a 10-12-2 mark the previous fall ... the BGSU men's soccer program also was one of the most-improved teams in the country, making Bowling Green one of just four Division-I schools (Fairfield, Niagara, Sacramento State) to be cited on both lists.
FALCONS FINISH IN THE REGIONAL RANKINGS
Bowling Green was ranked 13th in the Great Lakes Region in the final Soccer Buzz poll of the 2005 season ... it marks the first time in the history of the program that the Falcons were listed in the end-of-season rankings.
SENIOR PRIDE
There is little doubt that the Falcons' senior class can stake a claim to being the most successful group in school history ... the evidence, year by year ...
2002: As true freshmen (Shingler was in her second year), the class came to BGSU, joining a team that had made the MAC Tournament just twice in the program's first five years ... the group helped that team finish fourth in the MAC standings, set a school record with 12 total wins, and advance to the league tourney semifinals.
2003: The Falcons were the eighth and final seed for the MAC Tournament, but advanced all the way to the championship match before succumbing.
2004: Last year's team also finished eighth in the regular season, again earning the final berth in the conference tourney field ... but, BGSU outscored opponents, 9-2, en route to three wins and a MAC Tournament championship ... that team made the first NCAA Championships appearance in school history.
2005: This year's team became the first-ever Falcon club to win the MAC regular-season title, finishing the regular season with eight consecutive wins to post a 9-2-0 league mark ... then, BGSU hosted and won the MAC Tournament to advance to the NCAAs for the second consecutive year ... in addition to league wins, the Falcons also set a school record for overall wins, with 14.
SENIOR MOMENTS
FAMILIAR OPPONENT IN AN UNFAMILIAR PLACE
In the NCAA Championships, the Falcons played at Notre Dame for the first time in school history ... but, BGSU's first-round opponent was a most familiar one ... the Falcons have faced Michigan State more often than any other non-conference foe, as the teams have met in the regular season in all nine years since BG added varsity women's soccer in 1997 ... the current class of BGSU seniors played both their first-ever and last-ever collegiate matches against MSU ... the Spartans downed the Falcons by a 4-0 count at Cochrane Field on Sept. 1, 2002, before downing BG in the NCAAs in 2005.
FALCONS WIN SECOND-STRAIGHT TOURNAMENT TITLE
BGSU has enjoyed great success in the MAC Tournament over the last few years ... home or away, top seed or eighth seed, it doesn't seem to matter for the Falcons these days ... in 2005, BG won the league tourney title for the second consecutive year ... the 2005 journey had some similarities to the '04 run, with a few differences as well ...
THE TITLES JUST KEEP ON COMING
The Falcons, as mentioned, have won back-to-back MAC Tournament titles, having won the league tourney and advancing to the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history in 2004, and repeating in '05 ... BG has had a successful MAC Tournament history (more on that later in these notes), but that success usually came with the Falcons as a lower-seeded team ... in 2005, for the first time in BGSU annals, the Brown and Orange won the MAC's regular-season title ... the Falcons began MAC play at 1-2, but did not lose after Sept. 30 - reeling off a school-record 11-match unbeaten streak - until the NCAA Championships.
THE FALCONS / THE MAC IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2005 season marked the Falcons' second-ever trip to the NCAA Championships, and the second in as many years ... BGSU is now 0-2 all-time in NCAA play, with both matches coming to Big Ten Conference opponents ... last November, BG headed to Columbus, falling by a 2-0 count to host Ohio State in the first round ... the Falcons' 2005 trip to the national tourney was the seventh for a MAC team ... league schools are now 3-7-0 in the NCAAs ... the complete list of MAC results in the NCAA Tournament ...

UNBEATEN STREAK FINALLY COMES TO AN END
The Falcons' unbeaten streak was finally snapped at 11 matches, with the loss in the NCAA Championships ... the Brown and Orange, after losing to Ball State on Sept. 30, dropped to 5-6 on the year, but then went 9-0-2 to win the MAC's regular-season and tourney titles ... that streak more than doubled the old school record, as had the Falcons' eight-match winning streak that ended the regular season ... BGSU went a perfect 8-0-0 in the month of October ... the old school mark was three consecutive wins, amassed on eight different occasions over the years, prior to this year's eight-match streak ... BG teams had posted two five-match unbeaten streaks, most recently in 2002.
WORKING OVERTIME IN THE MAC TOURNAMENT
The 2005 MAC Tournament illustrated the parity among conference teams ... parity often is used as a negative word, but the MAC's talent was evident in the results of this year's tourney ... of the seven league tournament matches in '05, only one - BGSU's 2-0 win over Miami - was decided by more than one goal ... four of the seven contests went to overtime, with three requiring penalty kicks after the teams played 110 minutes ... the complete tourney schedule and results ...

'LINCOLN', 'KENNEDY', 'TOURNEY' AND 'TRUNDLE' ALL HAVE SEVEN LETTERS (also titled, CONSPIRACY THEORIES)
There were some eerie similarities between the Falcons' 2005 MAC Tournament quarterfinal match vs. Toledo and the championship game against Kent State five days later ... we're not saying outside forces were at work ... but, submitted for your approval, here are some of those similarities ...
MAC TOURNAMENT SUCCESS: FOURTH FINAL FOR FALCONS
FALCONS SWEEP MAC SPECIALTY AWARDS
Members of the BGSU women's soccer program garnered all three of the league's specialty awards in 2005 ... senior Samantha Meister was named the MAC Player of the Year, while Andy Richards picked up the Coach-of-the-Year award, and Corbie Yee was chosen as the MAC Freshman of the Year ... Meister and senior Britt Anderson were named to the All-MAC First Team, while classmate Julie Trundle was selected to the all-league second team ... Yee and Susan Hunter each were chosen to the MAC's All-Freshman Team ... all awards were the result of voting by the league's 12 head coaches.
BGSU GRABS SOME TOURNAMENT HARDWARE, TOO
Four Falcon players were named to the MAC's All-Tournament team after the Brown and Orange captured that title ... seniors Molly Bremen, Ali Shingler and Julie Trundle and freshman Corbie Yee all were named to the team ... the league's all-tournament team consists of 11 players, with no MVP chosen.
OCTOBER (AND NOVEMBER) SUCCESS
SUCCESSFUL IN THE CLASSROOM, TOO
The Falcons, successful on the field, have been just as successful in the classroom ... six BGSU student-athletes, the most of any MAC school, were named to the Academic All-MAC team in 2005 ... seniors Molly Bremen, Leah Eggleton, Samantha Meister, Ali Shingler and Julie Trundle, along with sophomore Janie Babich, all represented BG on that team ... the Academic All-MAC Women's Soccer Team is the result of voting by faculty athletic representatives at the 12 league institutions ... a total of 28 student-athletes were named to the team ... to qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport ... first-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
WE'VE COME FULL CIRCLE
The Falcons began the 2002 season with a home date against Michigan State on Sept. 1 ... the Spartans spoiled BG's opener with a 4-0 win at Cochrane Field ... on that date, however, no fewer than seven members of the current senior class made their respective collegiate debuts ... Samantha Meister, Megan Rapp and Julie Trundle all started the contest, while Britt Anderson, Leah Eggleton, Natalie Sampiller and Ashley Wentzel all saw action off the bench ... Andy Richards' second-half starters included eight frosh ... that group, of course, has become the most successful class in program history, and headed to Notre Dame, Ind., to meet that same MSU program ... all nine seniors saw action in the latter game vs. the Spartans, in the NCAA Championships.
SHINGLER, TRUNDLE GARNER NATIONAL AWARDS
On back-to-back days, a pair of Falcons earned national honors ... for her stellar play in the MAC Tournament, Ali Shingler was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week on Nov. 10 ... the honor marked the eighth time in the history of the BGSU women's soccer program - and the second in as many days - that a Falcon player was named to a national weekly team ... Shingler earned the recognition after posting three shutouts, for a total of 310 scoreless minutes, as the Brown and Orange blanked Toledo, Miami and Kent State to win the league tourney crown and advance to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year ... Shingler made a total of 12 saves in the three games, and had three more stops during the penalty-kick phases vs. the Rockets and the Golden Flashes ... Shingler's honor came a day after senior Julie Trundle was named to the Soccer America Women's College Team of the Week ... Trundle helped the Falcons to the league title, converting the decisive, match-ending penalty kick against both UT and KSU ... Trundle joined Shingler on the MAC's All-Tournament Team ... both the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week and the Soccer America Women's College Team of the Week are comprised of 11 players from around the country, chosen on the basis of their play the previous week.
SHINGLER IS TOURNAMENT-TESTED
Ali Shingler finished her career with a total of five MAC Tournament wins, the most in school history ... she had a record of 5-1-3 in the league tourney, with the Falcons having advanced in eight of the nine matches ... in each of the three ties, Shingler had a shutout and helped the Falcons advance via penalty kicks to the next round ... in 2005, Shingler had three shutouts in as many MAC Tournament matches, with a total of 310 scoreless minutes in tourney play ... she made a total of 12 saves during that time, and also had a total of three more stops during the penalty-kick phases against Toledo and Kent State ... Shingler has posted five of the six MAC Tournament shutouts in BGSU history, and has a monopoly on BGSU's league tourney goalkeeping records.

SHINGLER NCAA TOURNAMENT-TESTED, TOO
Fifth-year senior Ali Shingler is the only Falcon ever to play goal in an NCAA Championships match, having drawn the start for BGSU's 2004 first-round contest at Ohio State as well as the 2005 contest vs. Michigan State ... in the Ohio State match, Shingler made nine stops in a 2-0 loss to the Buckeyes.
HEAD COACH Andy Richards
Andy Richards has completed his sixth season as a collegiate head coach, all with the Falcons ... the 2005 MAC Coach of the Year, Richards led the Brown and Orange to both the MAC's regular-season and tourney titles this fall ... he picked up his 50th career win on Sept. 11 vs. Eastern Illinois, and now has an overall record of 61-59-12, including a MAC Tournament mark of 8-3-3 ... Richards has led BG to the five finest seasons in school history in his tenure, including '05, as he guided the Falcons to the first regular-season title in BG annals ... he has led the Falcons to the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament on five occasions, to the championship match four times, and, in 2004, to the first league tourney title and NCAA Tournament berth in school history ... Richards and the Falcons have repeated that feat this year, as BGSU won the MAC Tournament crown and will face Michigan State Friday ... Eric Golz completed his second season with the program, and his first as top assistant, while Paul Fabry wrapped up his first season as a volunteer assistant in 2005.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU completed the 2005 campaign, the finest in school history, with an overall record of 14-7-2 ... the Falcons finished MAC play with a 9-2-0 ledger, good for the first league regular-season title in program history ... BG downed Miami, 2-0, in the league tourney semifinal, to advance to the final ... in that championship match, BG battled Kent State through 110 scoreless minutes, before the Falcons advanced via penalty kicks ... prior to the MU match, the Falcons played two tough matches with arch-rival Toledo in a five-day span ... BG closed the regular-season with a narrow 3-2 road win over UT, and the teams then played to a scoreless, double-overtime tie in the league tourney quarterfinal round, before the Falcons advanced via PKs ... that tie ended the school-record winning streak at eight matches, but the Falcons' unbeaten streak reached 11, also a school mark, before the loss to Michigan State in the first round of NCAA Championships play ... senior Samantha Meister had a team-high 22 points on the season, while classmate Britt Anderson had 17 ... Meister led the team with eight goals, while freshman Corbie Yee scored six and Anderson five ... senior Julie Trundle had three goals, a team- and MAC-best 10 assists and 16 points, while Yee had 15 points, including a goal and an assist vs. Miami ... junior Lindsay Carter scored 10 points and freshman Kristin McDonald and senior Ashley Wentzel seven apiece, while senior Leah Eggleton had six ... senior Ali Shingler started all 23 matches in goal this season, and had 109 saves and a 1.32 goals-against average ... BG returned 15 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's MAC Tournament championship team ... the group of returnees included no fewer than nine seniors, the most in school history ... the senior class has become the first class in school history to qualify for the MAC Tournament in four consecutive seasons, and also the first group ever to make it to the semifinals in every year ... BGSU's recruiting class was rated tops in the MAC by Soccer Buzz.
WATCH OUT: WINS RECORDS FALLING
DURING THE UNBEATEN STREAK ...
HOME SWEET HOME
STRINGING TOGETHER THE SHUTOUTS
Earlier this season, the Falcons set a school record by putting together a consecutive shutout streak of 445:03 in mid-October ... Ali Shingler was in net for nearly all of that streak, stringing together a total of 432:19 without allowing a goal, also a BGSU record ... in late October-early November, Shingler put together a streak that, while shorter, may be even more impressive ... Shingler and the Falcon defense went a total of 397:40 without allowing a goal, before the streak was finally broken with an own goal in the Michigan State match ... a total of 310 minutes of that streak came in the MAC Tournament, as BGSU did not allow a single goal during a march to the title ... Shingler was in goal for every second of that 397:40 ... she now owns the top-two, and three of the top-four, individual shutout streaks in school history.
PENALTY KICKS NOTHING NEW FOR SHINGLER, FALCONS
The penalty-kick situations in the Toledo and Kent State matches were nothing new for a number of Falcons, including goalkeeper Ali Shingler ... BGSU played to a scoreless draw through regulation and a pair of OT periods vs. Central Michigan in the 2003 semifinals, and the Falcons advanced via PKs on that day ... Shingler was the goalie of record for the Brown and Orange in that match.
WORKING OVERTIME
The Falcons picked up an overtime win over Eastern Illinois on Sept. 11 at Cochrane Field, and were 1-0-2 in OT matches in 2005 ... in the history of the BGSU women's soccer program, the Falcons are now 11-11-16 in overtime matches ... BG is just 4-9-8 in home contests that have gone to OT, but the Falcons are unbeaten in the last five overtime contests at Cochrane ... the Falcons have never lost a road overtime match, having gone 5-0-7 on opposing soil ... BGSU is 2-2-1 in neutral-site OT affairs ... overall, the Falcons are undefeated in the last seven overtime matches, having gone 2-0-5 since the last OT loss, to Ohio State on Oct. 31, 2003 ... BG is now 2-2-3 in MAC Tournament contests that require overtime, with BG advancing in all three ties via penalty kicks.
FALCON NOTES AND NUMBERS
SENIORS FINISH THEIR CAREERS TOGETHER
Senior co-captain Natalie Sampiller suffered an injury in the team's third match of the 2005 season, the Sept. 2 contest at Northern Arizona ... she did not play again until entering the Michigan State match with just 2:48 remaining ... that enabled all nine seniors to be on the field for the remainder of that match ... "The least I could do is to let them finish their careers on the field at the same time, and what better place to do it than the NCAA Tournament," said head coach Andy Richards after the match.
FALCONS PICKED FOURTH
The Falcons were picked to finish fourth in the MAC in the league preseason poll ... the poll was the result of voting by the league's 12 head coaches ... Kent State, the defending regular-season co-champion, was picked to win the 2005 regular-season and tournament crowns ... the poll, with actual finish ...
