BOWLING GREEN -- Curt Miller, who led the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to the best record in Mid-American Conference history last season, has received a two-year contract extension.
Miller is signed through June 30, 2011. He was hired in 2001 and signed a five-year extension in October, 2004. The terms of the new extension were not disclosed.
The Falcons finished 28-3 last season, the most wins in MAC history, and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second straight season by winning the MAC tournament. Miller was named the WBCA Region 4 coach of the year, and the MAC coach of the year for the second consecutive season.
Miller said yesterday he was happy to get back to the 'magic' number in coaching circles of having five years in the program.
"In the off-season recruiting, one of the first questions consistently asked by parents is, 'What is your future at Bowling Green?'" Miller said. "It is great to be able to say you have a long-term contract. It's a great benefit."
In five years at BGSU, Miller is 93-56. Paul Krebs, who had his last day of work as BGSU's athletic director Friday, completed the extension with Miller in his last few days. Krebs is leaving to be the athletic director at the University of New Mexico.
"Miller and his staff have returned Bowling Green to prominence in women's basketball," Krebs said. "This extension is a reward for his outstanding contributions and the team's numerous accomplishments over the past several years. We are excited about keeping him in the Falcon family."
Miller is grateful to Krebs for finishing his extension before Krebs left Bowling Green.
"When the season ended, Paul and I discussed our vision of the future," Miller said. "I was ecstatic when I learned that even though he had already been named the new AD at New Mexico, he was still willing to make a commitment to our staff. It was a great cap to an unbelievable season."
The Falcons could have as many as 12 of the 13 scholarship players for next season participate in summer workouts, Miller said. Last summer they had about the same number, which he said is impressive because unlike some schools, it's not mandatory for BGSU student-athletes to attend summer school.
"Especially with what last summer proved with how the work can jump-start you in the season, I'm pleased," Miller said. "I'm hoping to have the same kind of results as last year."
