MILWAUKEE, Wis. - In a matchup of 2005 NCAA Tournament teams, the host University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee posted a 3-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Aug. 27). The game, the second half of a Milwaukee Cup doubleheader, was held at Engelmann Field.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Falcons drop to 0-2.
Sophomore Brianne Eisenhard and junior Karie Sahly each were named to the Milwaukee Cup All-Tournament Team.
Erin Kreuser scored to give the home team a 1-0 halftime lead, while Taylor Powell and Louise Vraney had second-half goals for the Panthers.
The match was scoreless for nearly 29 minutes. The Panthers had the first solid scoring chance of the day with approximately 11:30 elapsed, as Kreuser cut left across the 18-yard box and unloaded a shot toward the upper left corner of the goal. But, BGSU junior goalkeeper Tiffany Hansen was able to make a leaping save, deflecting the ball wide of the post for a corner kick.
With exactly 29 minutes gone, Kreuser got the hosts on the board. Seeming out of nowhere, she hit a long shot that went over Hansen and into the upper part of the net. The unassisted marker was the lone scoring of the half.
Immediately after the UWM goal, however, the Falcons had a chance. Lucas beat several defenders down the left sideline and cut the ball back along the end line. She uncorked a shot, BG's first shot of the season, but Bar-Av was able to get a hand on the ball to knock it away. The teams went to the lockerroom with the Panthers ahead by a goal.
In the second half, the hosts had several early scoring opportunities, as with Jodi Klagos and Beth Steuer had shots within the first 10 minutes. But, Klagos' shot went just wide, and Hansen made a nice leaping save of the Steuer chance, deflecting the ball out of play for a corner.
Off of that corner kick, however, the Panthers doubled the lead. The left-side corner wound up on the foot of Kayla DeJardin at the right side of the box. Her shot attempt was deflected by Powell in traffic, and went into the net.
Again, the Falcons got a solid scoring opportunity right out of the kickoff. A pass by freshman Jen Czapka sent senior Lindsay Carter in on Bel-Av, but the `keeper was able to make the stop on Carter's bullet at point-blank range.
The Panthers concluded the scoring due in part to a BG miscommunication. On a UWM through-ball, Hansen came out to try to grab it, but a Falcon defender headed it just before she got there. The ball wound up on the foot of Vraney, who slid it into the net
BGSU had several more chances, with Carter involved in both. The senior found Czapka with a pass, but Czapka's shot was saved by Bar-Av. Then, with six minutes to play, Carter sent Rossi in on the right side. Rossi, battling a UWM defender the entire way, was able to get off a sliding shot attempt that was right on target, but was blocked out of play.
The Panthers held an 18-4 advantage in shot attempts, including an 8-4 margin in shots on goal. Bar-Av made four saves in her complete-match effort for the hosts.
Hansen had five saves, while sophomore Christy Zabek played the final 7:43 and did not face a shot on goal.
"I am proud of the manner in which we competed this weekend, against two teams which made the final 32 of the 2005 NCAA Tournament," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "Right now, we are a very young team that is learning valuable lessons every game.
"Despite our disappointment, with today's result, we know that the mistakes we are making will be solved. This group of young women have a very bright future ahead of them, and I am positive their hard work will turn into victories before too long."
The Falcons will return to action Friday (Sept. 1), opening the home schedule with a 5:00 p.m.a match vs. Xavier University at Cochrane Field.
NOTES * Marquette won the Milwaukee Cup ... the Golden Eagles and UW-Milwaukee each went 2-0 on the weekend, but MU was declared the champion by virtue of goal differential ... Marquette downed Sacred Heart by a 9-0 final in Sunday's first match.
* In addition to Eisenhard and Sahly, the all-tournament team consisted of four players from both Marquette and UWM ... MU's Allison Mallams was named the MVP of the tourney, and was joined on the team by Meghan Connelly, Lauren Weber and Christy Zwolski ... UWM's honorees included Ilana Bar-Av, Erin Kreuser, Louise Vraney and Amanda Winn ... Sacred Heart's Britney Dupee rounded out the all-tourney team.
* Three BGSU players -- Bland, Czapka and Lucas -- made their first collegiate starts in Sunday's match.
* UWM, like BGSU, qualified for the NCAA Championships last year ... the Panthers advanced to the second round before losing to Marquette.
* Milwaukee marked the second of three consecutive first-time opponents to open the season for the Falcons ... those three teams -- Marquette, UWM and Xavier -- are the only three first-time foes on BGSU's 19-match regular-season schedule.
* The Falcons' starting lineup included five freshmen -- Samantha Bland, Jen Czapka, Faith Juillerat, Stacey Lucas and Kayleigh Zajaros -- and a first-year transfer, junior goalkeeper Tiffany Hansen ... the remainder of the starting 11 included the team's lone senior, Lindsay Carter, juniors Karie Sahly and Tiernay Tilford and sophomores Brianne Eisenhard and Susan Hunter.
