BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Thirteen student-athletes reported to Falcon Volleyball's first official practice on August 9th. BGSU looks to build on last season's 18-win performance and contend for a MAC title in 2006.
"We looked very physical, we looked strong and everyone showed up in good shape" said Head Coach Denise Van De Walle about the first session. "It was a really good first day."
The Falcons began a busy first day with a three-hour morning session before taking a break for lunch. After the break the Brown and Orange returned for another two-hour session, followed by weight-training. Day one concludes with individual position training in the evening.
A Few Falcon Volleyball Preseason Notes
The 2006 season marks the 31st campaign of varsity volleyball at BGSU. Over the first 30 years of the program, the Falcons have an overall record of 513-413-3, for a winning percentage of .554.
Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Denise Van De Walle has added three new players to the 2006 roster. Milica Askic (Belgrade, Serbia), Corey Domek (Naperville, Illinois) and Shari Luther (Colgate, Wisconsin) will join the Falcons for the 2006 season.
Senior Chrissy Gothke recorded her 1,000th career assist on October 15th against Eastern Michigan last season. Paired with her 1,000 career digs, she became just the second player in Falcon history to hit the millennium mark in both categories. Even more impressive is the fact that Gothke accomplished this feat in just three seasons. Linda Popovich ('86-'89) racked up 1,247 digs and 4,406 assists in her illustrious career donning the Brown and Orange.
Replacing a pair of graduated left-side hitters (Emily Manser and Ashlei Nofzinger) and their 540 kills will be a big key to the Falcons success in 2006. The BGSU coaching staff will have plenty of options on the left-side however, with five left-side hitters on the roster. Juniors Maggie Karges and Madeline Means bring some experience to the table with over 300 career kills between the two. Freshmen Milica Askic and Corey Domek will also look to shoulder some of the load.
Holding down the fort in the middle for the Falcons this season is a foursome consisting of Juniors Stephanie Swiger and Corrie Mills, Sophomore Kendra Halm and Freshman Shari Luther. Swiger and Halm come off a 2005 season that saw both middles record 100+ blocks, ranking them seventh and ninth in the MAC, respectively. Mills, an All-Tournament Team member at the 2004 Raider Invitational, adds 231 kills and 110 career blocks to the mix.
