DAYTON, Ohio - Wright State University scored twice in the first half and went on to a 3-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Sept. 17). The non-conference match was held at WSU's Alumni Field.
With the victory, the Raiders remain undefeated on the season, improving to 6-0-2. The Falcons end the non-league portion of the 2006 schedule with a record of 3-5-0. BGSU's final 11 regular-season matches all come in Mid-American Conference play.
The Raiders, who extended their unbeaten streak to a school-record eight games, got on the scoreboard at the 16:49 mark, as Megan Bush took a loose ball and fired it past junior Tiffany Hansen. Just over 12 minutes later, Rose Nigro converted a Jess Rooma pass from the right flank, putting the hosts ahead by two goals.
WSU's Amy Miller closed the scoring on a 15-yard shot at the 80:14 mark, giving the hosts a three-goal lead.
The Raiders held a 17-9 advantage in shot attempts, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Steph Comisar stopped three BGSU shots to pick up her third shutout of the season. Hansen made six saves in 81-plus minutes, while sophomore Christy Zabek played the final 8:43 and did not face a shot on goal.
"We are extremely disappointed with the result today," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "We have played some nice soccer at times, but not gotten the ultimate reward. Then, when we haven't played so well, we have let in some goals that have put us in a big hole. We put ourselves in a hole today, and were unable to get out of it.
"The plain fact of the matter is, unless we start scoring goals, we are not going to win. You can't win, obviously, if you don't score. And, we also have to be a more competitive team over 90 minutes -- right now, we are a little bit patchy.
"We are encouraged by the fact that we are getting better and better each week. We just need to put 90 minutes of good soccer together and finish our chances. And the good news is, like everyone else, we are 0-0-0 heading into conference play. We will continue to work very hard on those aspects of the game that we need to work on. We are excited to get back at it with practice on Tuesday, and we are very much looking forward to next weekend and competing in the MAC."
The Falcons now return to Northwest Ohio to prepare for that conference schedule. BGSU will start a four-game homestand, the longest of the season, with a Friday (Sept. 22) match vs. Northern Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
