The announcement marks the fifth time this season that the Falcons have had a Player-of-the-Week selection. Senior Ali Mann has earned the honor twice, on Nov. 22 and Dec. 11, while junior Kate Achter (Nov. 28) senior Liz Honegger (Jan. 2) have also been recognized this season.
Horne, a native of Lima, Ohio (Lima Senior H.S.), averaged a team-high 16.5 points along with 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game as the Falcons posted a pair of wins last week, taking sole possession of first place in the MAC's East Division. Horne was second on the team in rebounding on the week, and tied for the team lead in steals.
Horne tied for game honors with 17 points in the Falcons' 74-52 home win over Kent State Wednesday (Jan. 10). That victory was BG's 28th in a row over MAC foes, setting new school and conference records. Horne went 3-for-6 from three-point range in that win, and also had four rebounds and three steals vs. the Golden Flashes.
On Saturday (Jan. 13), Horne had a game-high total of 16 points and tied for game honors with five steals as the Falcons picked up a 64-55 win at Ohio. In that contest, Horne also tied for team honors with seven rebounds, including three offensive boards.
Horne shot 46.4 percent from the field on the week, including a 5-for-12 effort (41.7%) from three-point land. On the season, she is averaging 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, ranking second on the team in both categories. Horne leads the team with 2.0 steals per contest.
Horne earned the MAC's Player-of-the-Week honor for the East Division, while Ball State's Julie DeMuth earned the award in the West Division.
Mann, Honegger and Horne give Curt Miller's Falcons three 1,000-point scorers on the 2006-07 roster. In fact, through the win at OU, the three players have combined for exactly 4,000 points since their arrival at BGSU.
In other news, the Falcons held at 18th in the latest edition of the Associated Press Top-25 poll, released Monday afternoon (Jan. 15). The Falcons' were ranked 18th in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN polls last week, the highest rankings for a MAC team in league history.
The Falcons are ranked in the AP poll for the fifth consecutive week. BGSU broke into the poll with a ranking of 25th, and stayed at that spot for a total of two weeks before moving up a notch to 24th in the New Year's Day poll. Then, BGSU made the biggest jump of any team in last week's (Jan. 8) poll, moving up six spots to 18th.
BGSU received 300 points in last week's AP poll, but received a total of 367 in this week's listing.
Monday's appearance in the AP poll marks the 17th week in MAC history that a league institution has been listed in that top-25, and BG has been that team in 13 of the 17 weeks (seven during head coach Curt Miller's tenure).
The Falcons are also ranked 18th in the nation in the most recent USA Today/ESPN poll. The new edition of that poll comes out Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 16).
One of BGSU's 2006-07 opponents, Duke, has moved up to number one in the nation in the AP poll. The Blue Devils improved to 18-0 with a Saturday (Jan. 13) win over then-No. 1 Maryland. Duke beat BGSU by nine points last month, and topped Maryland by 19, and the Devils have won each of their other 16 games by at least 21 points.
The Falcons are 14-2 on the season, and BGSU is 4-0 in MAC play after the wins over KSU and Ohio. BG is in Oxford, Ohio, for a Tuesday (Jan. 16) game against the RedHawks. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Millett Hall.
