KENT, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team broke a scoreless tie with three second-half goals Friday afternoon (Oct. 12), en route to a 3-0 win over Kent State University. The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Kent State Soccer Field.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 5-7-1 overall and 2-3-0 in MAC action, while the host Golden Flashes fall to 5-6-1 and 3-2-0, respectively.
Sophomore Stacey Lucas scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 66th minute, and senior Danielle Cygan gave the Falcons a two-goal advantage less than six minutes later. Soph Faith Juillerat added a last-second goal to close out the scoring.
Junior Corbie Yee assisted on each of the Falcons' final two goals of the afternoon.
"I am delighted with the competitive spirit that the team showed today," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "That was the difference in the game, as far as I was concerned, and the difference in today's display from what we saw last weekend.
"In truth, (today's play) is the expectation of the coaching staff and the expectation of the program. It is something that we have built up over many years, the expectation that we will always be competitive."
The Falcons outshot the Flashes by a 21-7 count, with BG posting double-digit shot totals in each half. The Brown and Orange had 11 shots on goal to Kent State's six.
In net, redshirt freshman Alexa Arsenault made six saves -- including a stop of a first-half penalty kick -- to earn her second shutout. Kris Nelson had eight stops for the Golden Flashes.
The Falcons had the first eight shot attempts of the day, with four of those shots on goal, before the Flashes recorded their first shot. That first shot was a penalty kick off the boot of Catherine Marosszeky in the game's 32nd minute, but she bounced her try off the crossbar.
BGSU held a 10-2 shots advantage in the first half, but the teams went to the intermission knotted at 0-0.
The Brown and Orange broke that scoreless deadlock with nearly 66 minutes gone, as Lucas converted her own rebound for what would prove to be the winning goal.
At the 71:20 mark, after Yee's shot try was blocked, the ball went to Cygan, who scored from 20 yards out. Juillerat completed the scoring in the final seconds.
"I am delighted that that fire was burning for us again today," said Richards. "And, I hope it will continue to burn through the rest of the season, because that will be key if we are to achieve MAC success.
"Credit goes to the entire team today. Even though we used relatively few players on the field in the game, we had a very good week of practice leading up to this game, which was a credit to everyone on the team. I hope we can keep this spirit alive for the Buffalo game and beyond."
The Falcons will continue the weekend trip to the MAC's "East Coast," with a Sunday (Oct. 14) match at the University at Buffalo. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at UB Stadium.
