BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Denise Van De Walle announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Louise Facca (Aurora, Ontario), Emily Kauth (Vandalia, Ohio), and Lauren Mizgalski (Stahlstown, Pennsylvania) will join the Falcons for the 2008 season.
Facca is currently in her senior year at Aurora High School. She has earned four varsity letters at Aurora and as the captain of her volleyball team all four years led her team to three York Region Championships, including a perfect 21-0 season in 2005 and to the OFSAA semi-finals this season. Facca was named the MVP of her team for two consecutive seasons in 2006 and 2007. She also represented Canada in the 2007 U-19 World Beach Championships finishing first at the Provincial Beach Championships and third at the National Beach Championships. She is also the captain of her basketball team, earned York Region All-Star honors, a three-time recipient of the Ontario volleyball award of excellence, Aurora high school participant of the year, and a silver medalist in 2005 for Ontario's under-16.
"Louise is one of the most versatile, athletic players we've seen," said BGSU volleyball head coach Denise Van De Walle. "She can play almost any position we need from setter, to left and right side hitter. She is a full six-rotation player and that will help us in the ball control department since we lose Karges, Simon, and Means. Louise is also an experienced international beach player. She has traveled extensively with her beach background. We're excited to have her join us. She has the talent to make an immediate impact."
Kauth, a 6'0 middle hitter is currently in her senior year at Chaminade-Julienne Catholic High School. Kauth attended high school with BGSU women's basketball Falcon, Lindsey Goldsberry. She has earned a varsity letter at Peninsula Catholic and three varsity letters at Chaminade-Juliennne. As a senior captain, Kauth led her team to a 22-3 season with a perfect 14-0 record in the Girls Greater Cincinnati League. She recorded 280 kills (4.0 kills per game) and 136 blocks (1.75 blocks per game) and earned GGCL first team honors, District 15 second team honors, and honorable mention All-Arena. All three years at Chaminade-Julienne Kauth and the Eagles have been second in district. Kauth has also lettered in basketball, soccer, and swimming, is a member of National Honors Society, and has earned scholar athlete and honor roll.
"Emily is a gifted athlete with great lateral quickness," said Van De Walle. "She's the type of player that will speed up our offense. She's dynamic and will be fun to train in our gym. I'm excited to get her here to work her into our system. She was our first commitment in the 08 class and we wanted to build this class around her. She has everything we need in a middle. She will be very fun to watch! She is highly academic and is the epitome of "student-athlete".
Mizgalski is currently in her senior year at Ligonier Valley High School. She is a four-year letter winner and has been named to the Heritage All-Conference team as a sophomore, junior, and senior. As a captain this season, she led Ligonier to a 11-7 season and was named to the Heritage All-Conference team for the third time and first team All-District. Mizgalski also lettered in basketball as a freshman and sophomore earning the David Bowman Memorial Girls Basketball Award and being named the MVP of the Ligonier Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament both years.
"Lauren is a tall, physical, left-handed player," said Van De Walle. "She will add more height to the team at 6'2". She already has excellent blocking skills. Once she has an opportunity to train with our strength and conditioning staff, we expect her to develop into a dominating front row player. She will need a little time to adjust to the speed of our game, but once that happens she will be terrific."
"All three of these players are just as outstanding in the classroom," said Van De Walle. "They are exactly what we look for here at BG. They have a great blend of competitiveness and passion for the game while on the court and they will bring that to their studies as well. They're used to winning and we look forward to getting that going right away in the fall. This is a great class."
