By JACK CARLE, Sentinel Sports Editor - Corbie Yee scored 1:46 into the first overtime to lift Bowling Green past Eastern Michigan, 2-1 in a Mid-American Conference quarterfinal tournament game Sunday at Cochrane Field. It's BG's fifth straight victory this season, all by one-goal.
"I got through and got a touch on it. It ricocheted off someone and went into the goal," Yee said. "When the goalie was coming out, she wasn't looking for it."
The Falcons, 10-9-1 overall, now face top-seeded Ball State Friday on the Cardinals' home field in the tournament semifinals starting at 2 p.m.
"I don't think we played our best soccer. We just got some inspiration toward the end," BG head coach Andy Richards said. "We needed a bit of luck to beat them, because they are a very good team."
For Yee, it's the third time in the last five games she has scored the game-winner and it's the third time in her career she's scored the game-winner in overtime.
"It's experience, but it's also timing. Everything is just coming together really well," Yee said about BG's current winning streak. "I just think we're meant to do this stuff because we just keep getting all these amazing opportunities and capitalizing on them."
It's the second game in which Bowling Green has scored the final two goals to produce a victory.
Last Thursday, Meagan Moran scored twice in the final two minutes of regulation to lift BG past Toledo, 2-1 and secure a home game for the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
On Sunday, Eastern scored with 3:57 remaining in the first half as Cassie Wilson's header off a corner kick got past BG goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault. Arsenault had gone up for the ball, but the corner went over her head and Wilson was able to beat the BG defender to the ball.
The Falcons finally got the equalizer with 4:24 to play in regulation. Moran sent a nice corner into the box and in a scramble in front of the net Samantha Bland was able to head the ball past EMU goalkeeper Maggie Manville to tie the game.
"We told them all along you have to keep playing (until the end)," Richards said. "As much as you tell a team that, sometimes you have to see it to believe it. I think they got that belief against Toledo on Thursday."
Arsenault started the play on the game-winner with a long punt. Yee shielded off an EMU defender and fired a quick shot, which deflected off another defender and spun into the far corner of the goal.
"Alexa did a great job of recognizing we had a numbers situation and launched that ball. Maybe the wind helped us a little bit. Corbie maybe got lucky, but she did the right thing in taking an early shot," Richards said.
NOTES: The victory was the 100th in the history of women's soccer at Bowling Green ... Yee is now tied with Samantha Meister for the career lead in overtime game-winners with three ... Manville made nine saves in the match and Arsenault had one ... Ball State beat BG 3-2 in overtime during the regular season.
