BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team dropped its third one-run loss of the week after a late-inning rally fell short against Northern Iowa in a 4-3 loss. The Falcons have had their fair share of close calls during the spring break trip, pulling off a pair of one-run wins against Valporaiso as well.
Sophomore Ryan Shay got things going right away in the top of the first inning, picking up an RBI-single to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Northern Iowa responded instantly in the home-half of the inning, however, with two runs of their own. The Panthers added runs number three and four (both unearned) in the second and fourth innings for a 4-1 advantage.
Senior Eric Lawson got his bat on track with a 2-for-3 day, including a double to open up the sixth inning. Fellow Senior Kurt Wells drew a walk to put two runners aboard with no outs. Northern Iowa turned a double play the next batter, but Lawson scooted over to third base. The scoring threat was halted with an inning-ending groundball by the next Falcon hitter.
As the BGSU bullpen stymied the Panthers lineup, Bowling Green found some offensive firepower in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Brian Hangbers sliced the deficit to a lone run with a two-RBI double into center field.
With just one out in the top of the ninth, the Brown and Orange had runners on first and second base again, unfortunately with the same result as the sixth inning. A groundball double play by the next batter ended the game and the Falcons spring break trip.
For the trip, BGSU won five of eight games and Sophomores Brandon McFarland and Ryan Shay were red-hot in the batter's box. Each drove in six runs with McFarland leading the Falcons with a .538 batting average down in Bradenton, Florida.
The Brown and Orange return to Ohio for their next game, a 3:00 PM showdown at Xavier on Tuesday, March 13th
