BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team is competing in a 22-team tournament in Chicago this weekend at the Great Lakes Center. There are 21 Division I college teams and one adult team consisting of a former collegiate players.
There is an extremely strong field at the tourney as all 21 of the collegiate teams had RPI's of 139 or better this past fall. Fifteen of the 21 teams were in the top 100 in the fall as well. The top seeds in the tournament are Texas, Purdue, Michigan and Michigan State.
"I like coming to this tournament because all the teams are really good," said Head Coach Denise Van De Walle. "We get a chance to play teams that we may not see in a typical fall season, like Clemson. It's also nice to come to Chicago because we have three players from that area and they get to play in front of family and friends. It will a long day of intense competition, but that's exactly what we wanted."
Other teams participating besides Bowling Green and the top seeds listed above are: Northwestern, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Dayton, Creighton, Virginia, Marquette, Connecticut, Kansas State, Iowa, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Western Michigan, Kansas, North Carolina and the adult team made of former college players.
Bowling Green is scheduled to play Michigan State and Clemson in their first pool play. Michigan State was a top 40 program and only lost two starters. The Tigers of Clemson won 20 matches in the fall and did not lose any starters.
The Falcons have played in two previous tournaments this spring. First, was an 8-0 showing at IPFW for the Brown and Orange. BGSU defeated Indiana Tech (3-0), Ashland (2-0) and IPFW (3-0). Next up, the Falcons hosted a tournament in which they posted an 8-2 record. They defeated Eastern Michigan (2-0), Cleveland State (2-0) and Findlay (3-0) before falling to Michigan State (1-2) in a tight 19-17 game three thriller.
