CINCINNATI...TRY #2
After competing in California at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational the Falcons will attempt a second trip to Cincinnati and with a surprisingly warm and dry weekend scheduled, it shouldn't be a problem. The Falcons have three defending All-Ohio Champions looking to repeat and keep the title as well as many more yearning for a title.
LOOKING FOR A REPEAT...or two or three....
The Falcons have a defending champions at the All-Ohio Championships in TaKarra Dunning, Jessica White, and Stephanie Hillman.
White is the defending 100-meter champion. Last year she ran the second fastest time in school history and qualified fro the 2006 Regional meet with a time of 11.58 seconds.
Last year, Dunning beat the 2006 Indoor MAC shot put champion to claim the All-Ohio shot put title with a throw of 48-06.00 to qualify for the 2006 Regional meet.
Hillman is the lone Falcon on the squad that has two All-Ohio Championship titles under her belt. In 2005 she won the 10,000-meter race (exhausting just to say...) and in 2006 she was the 5,000-meter champion? Will we see her repeat in either event or perhaps a new event? Only time will tell.
HOW DO THEY GET THERE?
Athletes must meet a qualifying mark (see page 2) sometime throughout the season to make the cut. The only other way an athlete can receive a bid to the NCAA Regional meet is to win their individual event at the conference meet so if any Falcon wins a MAC title this spring, they will automatically be qualified for the trip to Missouri in May.
BANQUET DATE SET
The banquet for the annual women's track and field has been set for Sunday, April 29, 2007. Guests will be welcomed at 4 p.m. and the program is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. Besides recognizing current Falcon athletes, three former Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) All-Americans will be honored.
PRE-SEASON POLL
The MAC released the pre-season poll and the Falcons were picked to finish tied for seventh with Ohio. Akron was tabbed to win the MAC while Western Michigan is slated to finish second.
The poll is voted on by the leagues 12 women's head coaches. The Outdoor MAC Championships will take place May 10-12, 2007, and will be hosted by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
RECAP
Track had a very successful weekend at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational while some athletes competed well at Spartan Invitational at Michigan State. Two athletes came away victorious including Kim Settle in California in the steeplechase setting a lifetime-best with a time of 10:52.84. It also places her fourth all-time. At the Spartan Invitational, Amanda Sefcik jumped a career-best 19-06.50 in the long jump to win the event.
There were several Falcon's that now rank on BGSU All-Time lists after their performance this past weekend. Besides Sefcik and Settle, Sabrina Forstein jumped 10-08.00 in the pole vault, a outdoor personal-best and it now ranks her third all-time at BGSU.
There were also many Falcons who reached new personal-bests at their meet this weekend. Shantell Lewis ran a 12.65 in the 100-meter dash. Kristen Carver ran 26.37 seconds in the 200-meters. She also jumped a PR in the long jump. Paige Lane did as well in the same event, jumping 14-04.00. Ashley Spates ran the 400-meter dash in a new best of 59.77. Danielle Thornton came through in the 800-meters in California, running a huge collegiate-best of 2:17.65. In the 1500-meters, it was Kara Butler running a best of 5:01.91. Andrea Pereira de Almeida ran the steeple in a PR of 12:44.59. Kylie Korsnack tied her best in the javelin, going 114-00.00.
