Falcons Crush the Blue Demons, 3-0

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons opened the Best Western Tournament with a bang on Friday (Sept. 14) against the Blue Demons sweeping them (30-15, 30-15, 30-23). Coming into the match the Falcons were 0-3 against the Blue Demons in prior meetings but that wouldn't mean a thing all night.
The Falcons were firing on all cylinders the entire night. The Falcons owned the net on offense and defense hitting a season high .349 as a team and allowing the Blue Demons nothing as they hit a -.010. A big part of shutting down the Blue Demon offense were the 10 team blocks by the Falcons.
The Orange and Brown came out ready to go grabbing the lead right away in game one with the defense stepping up big time. The Falcons totaled 25 digs in game one alone. As the Falcons pulled away from the Blue Demons the Falcons defense continued to make huge plays. With the Falcons ahead 11-7, Corey Domek came up with a huge dig earning herself one of the two defensive plays to be named the "Best Dig of Game" by Coach Van De Walle. The Falcons continued to fire away at the Blue Demons, with the score 16-11 the Falcons put together a nine point run extending their lead to 14 points. Coach Van De Walle pulled out the shovel for the second time in game one after a huge defensive play by Elizabeth Simon earning her "Best Dig of the Game", which was followed by teammate Milica Askic terminating play with a kill. The Falcons ended game one with a kill from Domek assisted by Sam Fish. The Falcons scored 11 of the last 15 points and kept the Blue Demons offense completely under wraps as they hit a -.023 in game one. Along with the standout defense the Falcon offense was on fire couldn't be stopped in game one alone the Falcons had 18 kills with only four errors hitting a .350.
After dominating game one the Falcons didn't let up in game two as the jumped out to an early lead. The Falcons kept attacking the Blue Demons as they put together a six point run to extend their lead to eight points, 13-5. The Falcons never let down allowing the Blue Demons to only come within seven points the rest of game two. The defense stepped up once again to finish game two with a block from Meghan Mohr and Kendra Halm.
After taking the first two games the Falcons came out ready to capture the game three but the Blue Demons didn't back down and continued to fight hard. The Falcons grabbed the lead early on and with the score 14-11, and put together a four point run to extend their lead to seven. The Blue Demons battled back but were only able to come within four points of the Falcons. The Falcons finished game three 30-23, sweeping the Blue Demons 3-0. The offensive was firing away in game three as well totally up 13 kills hitting a .360.
The Falcons offense had multiple people contributing on offense, leading the way was Domek with nine kills in 13 attempts with only one error hitting a .615. Also recording big numbers were Stephanie Swiger hitting .417 and Mohr hitting .389 each putting away seven kills. Fish distributed the offense with 24 assists.
"It was great to play at home after being on the road the last three weekends, "said BSGU Head Coach Denise Van De Walle. "I thought we played with a lot of fire and passion. I knew by the first couple swings we took it was going to be a big night at the net. Our offense looked really good. We attacked the ball hard and smart."
The Falcon defense was led by Simon with 11 digs and Chelsey Meek with 10 digs in the back court. The defensive stop at the net was led by Kendra Halm with six blocks and Mohr with five blocks.
"Defensively Simon and Chelsey led us in digs, but I thought the entire back court played hard," said Van De Walle.
"It was nice to get everyone into the line up," said Van De Walle. "After each match the team votes for player of the game. Tonight they voted the whole team. It was a total team effort to put the match away."
The Falcons now 6-5 return to Anderson Arena tomorrow (Sept. 15) to take on Duquesne at 12:30 p.m. EST and Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m. EST to defend their home court as they are undefeated at home 2-0.
