YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team erupted for three second-half goals to post a 3-0 road win over Youngstown State University Sunday afternoon (Sept. 23). The non-conference match was held at Stambaugh Stadium.
With the win, the Falcons close the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 3-4-1 record. The Penguins are now 1-8-0 on the year to date.
"Going on the road is never easy," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "Today, we played on FieldTurf against a very well-coached team in Youngstown State. I am very proud of the performance today.
Freshmen accounted for all three goals, while a redshirt freshman picked up the win in goal on Sunday. Jackie Tamerlano had the first two-goal game of her young career, scoring the Falcons' first two markers of the afternoon. Classmate Meagan Moran netted BGSU's final score -- her first collegiate goal -- in the game's late stages.
"Jackie's goals were both very well-taken goals today, good 'team goals'," said Richards. "Jackie showed great composure on both. Megan's was more of a spectacular effort, a left-footed shot from about 25 yards out in the waning seconds."
Redshirt frosh Alexa Arsenault made four saves to pick up her first collegiate shutout. The YSU game marked her second career start.
The Falcons and Penguins battled through a scoreless first half, although each team hit the post with a shot in the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, however, BG outshot Youngstown by a 15-3 count. It took the Brown and Orange just over four minutes to get on the board after the intermission.
Tamerlano's first goal came at the 49:03 mark, on an assist by junior Corbie Yee. Tamerlano would strike again just under nine minutes later, with sophomore Jen Czapka picking up the assist at 57:43.
The Falcons kept peppering YSU goalie Mariah Snyder with shots, but did not find the back of the net again until just seven seconds remained. Moran's first collegiate goal was assisted by junior Kristin McDonald and sophomore Carolyn Nesline.
For the game, the Falcons held advantages of 23-7 in total shot attempts and 16-4 in shots on goal. Snyder made a total of 13 saves for the Penguins.
"The first half was a very tight game, and Youngstown made it very difficult for us," said Richards. "But, we felt that if we could get a goal, we'd go on to win the game, and that's exactly what happened.
"I am proud of the team's performance today. It was a great day, to cap off a good weekend for us. We have had a very good non-conference schedule, very challenging, and we have developed very well over the last few games. Every field player got in today, so these performances really have been a team effort.
"We built our non-conference schedule with the goals of trying to get better each time out, and of preparing us for the Mid-American Conference schedule. I think we have achieved those goals."
The Falcons open the MAC schedule next weekend, beginning a four-game homestand with a Friday (Sept. 28) match vs. Northern Illinois University at Cochrane Field.
