TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 7-0 victory over Youngstown State University Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26). The non-conference dual match was held at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
The Falcons won two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point, then swept all six singles contests to close out the victory.
"I was pleased with the way we played today," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We really battled the whole match, and I think we were able to outfight them."
In doubles action, the team of junior Kelsey Jakupcin and freshman Christine Chiricosta picked up an 8-4 win at the top flight, while the sophomore duo of Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel won by an 8-3 outcome at flight number three.
In singles play, BGSU won all six matches in straight sets, with YSU winning more than two games only once in 12 sets.
Jakupcin dropped only two total games in a top-flight win over Anna Volkova (6-2, 6-0), while Chiricosta did not lose a single game in her dismantling of Tanisha Welch at the second flight.
"Kelsey played lights-out today," said Dean. "She lost to Volkova at our invite in the fall (BGSU Invitational; Sept. 15-16), and was very motivated to turn that result around."
Babina participated in the closest singles match of the day, as the Penguins' Emily Thayer took her to a first-set tiebreaker at the third flight. Babina won that tiebreaker, 8-6, then went on to a 6-2 win in the second set.
"Katia had a tough match against a very steady player in Emily Thayer," said Dean. "She did a very nice job of battling to win the tiebreaker and then close out her match."
BGSU dropped a total of just six games among the six sets in flights 4-6. Kintzel lost just one game in her fourth-flight win over Irena Lanc (6-1, 6-0), while senior Jenna Nussbaum made quick work of Kelly Culbertson at flight number five, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Junior Stefanie Menoff picked up a win at the sixth flight -- the 50th singles win of her career -- with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hannah Patton.
The Falcons will continue a six-match homestand with a Sunday (Jan. 27) match vs. Wright State University at Shadow Valley. First serve is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
