BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Quoting BGSU men's basketball coach Louis Orr after Wednesday's Duquesne game...
(Opening statement)
"If you watched the game, I guess it was pretty obvious. Our turnovers, playing against their pressure, were the difference in the game. We spotted them some points early. We had some good runs, but at the end, that's what did us in."
How does this game prepare you for MAC play?
"That's something I'll have to see. We have to improve, especially with the ball. We did do some good things tonight. This was the second game in a row where we shot 33 free throws; we hadn't been getting to the line very much. We had 18 offensive rebounds, and outrebounded Duquesne by nine. So, we did some good things, but turnovers have plagued us throughout the year."
What is your assessment of your team as non-conference play comes to an end?
"I think we are a work in progress. We are a team that has to learn to trust the fundamentals. I think we are a team that is trying to find ourselves. Everybody has a new role on the team this year. We've got a young backcourt -- we've got a freshman in Joe Jakubowski, and Darryl Clements is playing more minutes than he has ever played. Nate Miller's role is bigger this year. Chris Knight is a freshman, and Otis (Polk) and Marc (Larson) have larger roles. You can go right down the line. We are still establishing leadership on the court. It is a process, and it's painful at times, but we've got a good group of guys, and I know they want success. They have done some good things, but we've got to do more and we have to improve. We realize the season is a marathon, not a sprint ... we have to persevere, and we have to fight through things."
Can you talk about the play of Otis Polk tonight?
"I'm a firm believer that when a player practices well, that's the first evidence you see that a player is coming into his own. And, especially since we've come back from the (holiday) break, I have seen Otis start to arrive. I've seen him start to arrive on the offensive end, on the boards, he's playing with more confidence and more spring in his step."
Brian Moten also provided some offense and some energy off the bench tonight.
"Brian has always been a pretty good transition guy, and he has been coming on offensively in practice. He can get out on the break, and we saw him get a chance to get loose tonight, to get out on the break and get some easy baskets. With our team, we need everybody to be efficient and productive. We can't just have a couple of guys; we've got to go 10 strong."
