Falcons on the Road Again this Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, having concluded the most successful September in program history, begins the month of October with a pair of road games vs. intra-state rivals ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards will conclude a five-match road swing this weekend, starting with a trip to Athens for a Friday (Oct. 3) game against Ohio University ... kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at Chessa Field ... then, the Brown and Orange will close the trip with a Sunday (Oct. 5) match vs. the University of Akron ... kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lee Jackson Field ... following this weekend, the Falcons will play five of seven games at home to close the regular season.

• 54-57-11 in Mid-American Conference regular-season matches;
• 33-18-6 vs. MAC schools over the last four-plus seasons (including regular-season and tournament matches), and 25-13-4 vs. league foes in the last three-plus years;
• 52-51-8 at home, including 22-12-2 at Cochrane Field in the last three-plus years;
• 46-55-11 in road contests;
• 8-9-2 all-time in neutral-site matches;
• 43-47-8 in the month of September; through the end of the ninth month of '08;
• 44-48-7 in October matches;
• 3-1-0 in games played on Oct. 3 (including wins in the last three games, in which BG has outscored opponents by a total of 15-1);
• 2-2-0 in Oct. 5 matches (with a win over Akron, 3-0 in 2001, on that date);
• 36-1-1 in the last 38 games in which BG has scored first (including a mark of 6-0-0 in such games this season); and
• 0-3-1 in 2008 matches in which the opponent has scored first (with the tie coming at Ohio State).
SWEET SEPTEMBER SUNDAYS (AND FRIDAYS, TOO)
The Falcons just finished the most successful September in program history ... BGSU posted a record of 6-1-1 in the ninth month of 2008 ... prior to this season, BGSU's best September record came in 1998, when the Falcons went 5-3-1.
LAST WEEKEND
The Falcons split a pair of games on the road to begin Mid-American Conference play ... on Friday (Sept. 26), host Northern Illinois scored a pair of first-half goals less than three minutes apart en route to a 2-1 win over the Falcons ... freshman Alyssa Zuccaro scored BG's lone goal, midway through the second half, with junior Colleen Kordan picking up the assist, but BG could draw no closer ... the loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Falcons ... redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault made three saves on the day ... on Sunday (Sept. 28), soph Katie Stephenson's goal in the 23rd minute proved to be all the offense that Arsenault and the BG defense needed ... junior Kaitlyn Kobe had the assist on Stephenson's score, while Arsenault made 10 saves in the shutout win.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 6-3-2 on the season, and BG is 1-1-0 in MAC play ... the Brown and Orange, as mentioned, split a pair of matches on the conference's "West Coast" last weekend, losing at Northern Illinois before picking up a win at Western Michigan ... BGSU closed the non-conference portion of the schedule with four consecutive wins, and the Falcons had a six-game unbeaten streak prior to the loss at NIU ... no fewer than 13 different Falcons have scored at least one goal this season to date ... seniors Gina Rossi and Corbie Yee currently lead the way, with eight points apiece, while sophomore Katie Stephenson has seven ... that trio has scored three goals each, to tie for the team lead ... four Falcons have two goals on the year, including senior Kristin McDonald, junior Colleen Kordan and freshmen Katelyn Turner and Alyssa Zuccaro ... another freshman, Megan Amann, has a team-high four assists ... redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault has started all 11 matches, and has 57 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.85 ... senior Christy Zabek has played over 76 minutes of shutout ball in three relief appearances ... BGSU returned 18 of 23 letterwinners, including nine starters, from a 2007 squad that went 10-9-3 overall and 6-5-0 in MAC play ... the '07 Falcons finished fourth in the final conference standings, then advanced all the way to the MAC Tournament's championship match for the fourth time in five seasons ... the returning Falcons combined for nearly 90 percent of the team's goals scored in 2007, while the two returning goalkeepers combined to start 21 of the team's 22 matches last fall.
SCORING SURGE
The Falcons have scored a total of 24 goals through 11 games this year ... that goal total is just four shy of matching the team's total for the entire 2007 season ... last year's club scored 28 goals in 22 matches ... in fact, with 2.18 goals per game to date, this year's team is on pace to break the school record ... the 1998 Falcons had 2.10 gpg.
LOOKING FOR A RECORD AT THE OTHER END OF THE FIELD, TOO
The BGSU defense, not to be outdone by the offense, also is on a school-record pace as October begins ... the Falcons have allowed just nine goals through 11 games, an average of only 0.82 gpg ... the school-record low is 1.30 gpg allowed, by both the 2005 and 2006 BG teams.
SHUTOUT STREAK ENDS, BUT ANOTHER BEGINS
The Falcons saw a school record-tying streak of four consecutive shutouts come to an end with Friday's (Sept. 26) 2-1 loss at Northern Illinois ... but, BGSU bounced back with another shutout win at Western Michigan two days later ... the Falcons had gone a total of 425:34 without allowing a goal, the second-longest such streak in program history, prior to Friday ... the school record remains 445:03, set in October of 2005 (coinciding with BG's first streak of four-straight shutouts).
ARSENAULT STARTS ANOTHER STREAK, TOO
Redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault saw her personal shutout streak come to an end at 380:34 at NIU ... the streak was the longest of her career and the fourth-longest individual streak in school history ... but, Arsenault has started a new streak, having blanked opponents for 164:50 since giving up a pair of goals early in the first half at Northern ... senior Christy Zabek holds the school record, with a scoreless streak of 544:48 to begin her Falcon career (Sept. 16, 2005 to Oct. 20, 2006).
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
Ohio is 2-6-1 on the season, and the Bobcats - like seven other MAC teams - are 1-1-0 in MAC play ... last weekend, OU suffered a 4-0 loss at Kent State on Friday, before downing Buffalo, 2-1, in double overtime ... that win snapped a seven-game winless streak, and was the team's first triumph since the season opener on Aug. 29 ... Amy Lower leads the team in scoring, with six points ... she has three of the 'Cats seven goals this year ... both Laura Dieter and Jackie Hanson have three assists ... in goal, Jess MacLean and Christa Puccio each have seen time ... MacLean has 25 saves and a goals-against average of 1.72, while Puccio has 22 stops and a 1.99 GAA ... last year, the Bobcats went 5-11-3 overall and 5-5-1 in MAC action ... head coach Stacy Strauss welcomed back 12 letterwinners, including five starters, from that club ... the school's athletics web site is www.ohiobobcats.com.
The Falcons trail Ohio, 8-2-1, in the all-time series between the teams, but BGSU has won two of the last three meetings ... last year, Corbie Yee's 'Golden Goal' gave the Falcons a 1-0, double-overtime win at Cochrane Field ... Yee has had the GWG in both BG series wins over the 'Cats, with the other one coming during her freshman year of 2005 ... the Falcons are 0-4-1 in road games vs. Ohio (BG does have two wins at Chessa Field, vs. Western Michigan and Central Michigan in the 2004 MAC Tournament) ... the Bobcats picked up a 3-0 win in the Falcons' last trip to Athens, two years ago.
Akron has an overall record of 6-3-0, and the Zips will take a 1-1-0 MAC ledger into a Friday match vs. Toledo ... last weekend, UA picked up a 2-1 win at UB, before falling at KSU by a 4-1 count ... the Zips had started the season with a 5-0 record, and UA is 3-0 in home games heading into the weekend ... Britni Back leads the team with six goals and 15 points, while Jordan Baranowski has eight points, including a team-leading four assists ... Jenn Wolbert has played every minute in goal, and has 56 saves and a 2.33 GAA ... Akron went 6-7-6 overall and 1-6-4 in MAC play last fall ... a total of 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, returned from that team for first-year head coach Chris Pfau ... the school's athletics web site is www.GoZips.com.
The Falcons lead Akron, 6-1-0, in that series, but the Zips' lone series win came in BGSU's last trip to the Lee Jackson Field, as UA took a 2-1 decision in 2006 ... last year at Cochrane Field, Yee's second-half goal gave BG a 1-0 win ... the Falcons are 2-1-0 in road games vs. the Zips.
STEPHENSON NAMED MAC S-A-O-W
Sophomore Katie Stephenson was named the MAC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week last Thursday (Sept. 25) ... the Lexington, Ohio, native earned the honor after assisting on the game-winning goal vs. Detroit, then scoring in a win at Xavier two days later ... Stephenson has a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA as a finance major.
FALCON FIRSTS
Last Friday's game marked BGSU's first-ever loss in DeKalb, Ill. ... the Falcons had been 4-0-0 in road games vs. Northern Illinois prior to this season ... conversely, Sunday was BG's first win in Kalamazoo, Mich. ... the Falcons are now 1-6-0 all-time in road games vs. the Broncos, and 1-6-1 at the WMU Soccer Complex (includes a tie vs. Central Michigan in the 2003 MAC Tournament).
A FEW FINAL FALCON NOTES
The Falcons have won five of the last six games, and BGSU is 6-1-1 since starting the season with a record of 0-2-1 ... all six of the Falcons' wins, and one of BGSU's two ties, have been shutouts ... sophomore Katie Stephenson scored her third goal of the year at Western Michigan Sunday (Sept. 28), tying her for the team lead ... seniors Gina Rossi and Corbie Yee each have three goals this year as well ... Stephenson's seven points have come in the last five games ... she has topped her total for all of last season, having amassed five points as a freshman in 2007 ... junior Kaitlyn Kobe picked up her third assist of the season in that WMU game, after going her first two years without a point ... Kobe also had helpers in back-to-back games vs. Tennessee Tech (Sept. 12) and Marshall (Sept. 14) ... classmate Colleen Kordan's assist on Friday at Northern Illinois was her first of the season and the fourth of her career ... she is fourth on the team in scoring with five points this fall ... Kordan entered the 2008 season with a total of three points (all on assists) in her first two years at BG ... the Falcons now have seven shutouts in this season's 11 games ... redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault has five complete-game shutouts, and has combined with senior Christy Zabek on the other two ... Arsenault's total of five shutouts this season increased her career total to 11, in just 24 career starts ... she ranks third on that school list, trailing only Erika Flanders (17 shutouts from 1999-2002) and Ali Shingler (16 from 2001-05) ... the Falcons have scored 10 first-half goals through 11 games, topping the total for all of last year (22 games) ... the 2007 club scored a total of nine goals before halftime ... the Falcons are 3-2-2 in road games this season to date ... BGSU leads the MAC in scoring, averaging 2.18 goals per game ... at the other end of the field, BGSU's total of seven shutouts also leads the conference.
