MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (BGSUFalcons.com) - League-leading Central Michigan University scored a pair of second-half goals to post a 2-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon (Oct. 17). The Mid-American Conference game was held at the CMU Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Chippewas improve to 11-2-1 overall and 6-0-1 in MAC play. The Falcons, who entered the day in sole possession of second place, fall to 9-4-3 and 4-2-1, respectively. Through Friday's play, BGSU is now tied for third in the league.
The loss snapped BG's three-game winning streak, as well as a five-match unbeaten streak for the Brown and Orange. The Falcons also saw a school-record shutout streak come to an end.
The Chippewas were credited with a 27-7 advantage in total shot attempts, and a 10-2 margin in shots on goal. For the Falcons, redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault made eight saves, all in the second half.
Shay Mannino had two stops for the home team to earn the win.
After a scoreless opening half, Valerie Prause got the home team on the board at the 50:09 mark, firing home a cross from Amanda Waugh. Just over 10 minutes later, Erica Rohren scored the Chippewas' second goal, with Molly Gerst getting the assist.
"It was a very tight, very keenly-fought contest today, pitting two teams that were playing very well," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "I thought we had the upper hand in the first half, as we managed to deal with their attacking threats very well.
"At halftime, we talked about how we needed to proceed, and I felt we were in good shape. I also felt that the first goal was probably going to dictate the winner. Unfortunately for us, Central got that goal off a bit of a scramble, and followed that up with another one 10 minutes later.
"So, it is disappointing, especially with the way we had played in the first half, and especially with the expectations we had going into the game. We did not come away with a victory today, but in the bigger picture, we have not lost sight of our long-term goals of qualifying for the MAC Tournament and improving our positioning for that tournament as much as possible. To that end, we need to go back and get ready for an important game Sunday."
The Falcons close the road portion of the regular-season schedule on Sunday (Oct. 19), heading to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
