BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Freshmen Megan Amann and Alyssa Zuccaro teamed up for a first-half goal, and redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault posted yet another home shutout, as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Kent State University Friday afternoon (Oct. 24). The Mid-American Conference match was held at a rainy Cochrane Field.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 10-5-3 overall and 5-3-1 in MAC action, while the Golden Flashes drop to 5-10-1 and 2-6-1, respectively.
The only goal of the match came with just over 10 minutes gone. Amann took a corner kick from the left side of the field, and Zuccaro headed it past KSU goalkeeper Kris Nelson.
"This is a very important win for Bowling Green," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "The late stages of the game were very tense, and we defended very well, especially in the last 10 or 15 minutes, when Kent State was pushing to get the equalizer."
Kent State held a 15-7 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 margin in shots on goal. Arsenault made nine saves, while Nelson had two stops at the other end of the pitch.
On a rainy, chilly day at Cochrane Field, neither team had a great many scoring chances. The Flashes had a few shots in the early going, and Zuccaro's goal came on BGSU's first shot attempt of the afternoon. The goal was very similar to Zuccaro's winning goal in a 4-0 victory over Miami on Oct. 12, a goal which also came off a corner kick by Amann.
The Falcons had several chances negated by foul calls in the second half. In the first 10 minutes of the latter period, Amann's crossing ball was just out of the reach of a lunging Gina Rossi, but soph Jackie Tamerlano tracked down the cross on the right side of the penalty area. Tamerlano played a cross that Zuccaro headed, but the whistle blew before the ball reached Zuccaro's head, and the shot was waved off.
With just under 20 minutes left, junior Colleen Kordan's long free kick sailed into the box, where classmate Samantha Bland and a KSU defender each jumped for the ball. The ball glanced off a head and went just over the crossbar.
Six minutes later, junior Kaitlyn Kobe served a nice ball into the box, but Nelson was able to dive and grab the ball just before senior Kristin McDonald got to it.
With just under 10 minutes remaining, a Kent State free kick sailed into a crowded penalty area. The Flashes' Catharine Marosszeky headed it toward goal, but Arsenault was able to grab the ball before one of the KSU players in the area could take a poke at it.
Two minutes later, Nelson leapt to break up a scoring chance, grabbing senior Corbie Yee's cross just before Rossi arrived.
With less than a minute to play, Kent State had what was arguably its best scoring chance of the game. Marosszeky's short pass found Caitlin Hester, and Hester uncorked a long shot from approximately 30-to-35 yards out. The shot seemed ticketed for the left side of the goal, before Arsenault was able to make a diving stop, tipping the ball over the end line. The Falcons cleared the ensuing corner kick out of danger, and BG preserved the shutout and the win.
"I felt the game was as much about us beating the elements as it was about beating Kent State," said Richards. "The rain, the cold and the wet surface really had an effect on the game. It made it very difficult to play, and really evened the game out.
"But, we got a great goal from Alyssa. It was a nice corner kick by Megan Amann, and a great finish. Obviously, we would have liked to get a second goal, to make things a little more comfortable for us on the bench. But, we are very happy to get the win, to get the shutout and to keep everyone healthy as we now look to Sunday's game."
The Falcons will continue a three-game homestand with that Sunday (Oct. 26) contest, vs. the University at Buffalo. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., with 'Senior Day' festivities taking place prior to the game.
