ATHENS, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University women's soccer goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault kept yet another clean sheet, but her Ohio University counterpart did the same at the other end of the pitch, as the Falcons and Bobcats battled to a scoreless draw Friday afternoon (Oct. 3). The double-overtime, Mid-American Conference match was held at Chessa Field.
The result leaves both teams with 1-1-1 MAC records. BGSU is now 6-3-3 overall, while Ohio is 2-6-2.
For Arsenault, Friday was her sixth complete-game shutout of the season. BGSU has eight overall shutouts as a team. OU's Jess MacLean, however, matched Arsenault with a shutout of her own.
"It was a very hard-fought game today," said BG head coach Andy Richards. "I can't fault the team for their energy, both on the field and from the sidelines. We gave everything we had today, in that respect.
"Unfortunately, this was one of those days when we look back and rue some missed chances."
Among those chances were a shot by freshman Alyssa Zuccaro that hit the post in the opening half, and a second-half shot by sophomore Jackie Tamerlano that hit the crossbar.
"Additionally, their goalkeeper made decent saves on a couple of our opportunities," said Richards. "And, we had some other chances that we might have put away, had we perhaps taken a more composed finish or a simpler option.
"So, the game was really there for us to win, and I think we kind of look at this as two points dropped rather than one point gained. That being said, however, we got another shutout and looked very strong defensively. We just needed that one moment of simplicity around goal, that would have put the ball in the back of the net."
The Falcons had a 16-10 advantage in total shots on Friday, and BGSU had eight shots on goal to the Bobcats' two. The Falcons outshot the hosts, 4-1, in the overtime periods, with three of BG's shots on target during the extra 20 minutes.
MacLean made eight saves to earn the shutout for the 'Cats, while Arsenault was called upon to make two stops.
The Falcons will conclude a five-game road swing with Sunday's (Oct. 5) match at Akron. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. at UA's Lee Jackson Field.
FALCON NOTES
* BGSU is now 3-2-3 in road games this season to date.
* The Falcon defense entered Friday's game on a school-record pace for fewest goals allowed in a season ... and, obviously, BGSU did nothing to hurt that cause ... BGSU has allowed nine goals in 12 games, an average of only 0.75 gpg ... the school-record low is 1.30 gpg allowed, by both the 2005 and 2006 BG teams.
* The Falcons saw a school record-tying streak of four consecutive shutouts come to an end with last Friday's (Sept. 26) 2-1 loss at Northern Illinois ... but, BGSU has bounced back with a pair of shutouts, at Western Michigan and Ohio ... the Falcons, after seeing a shutout streak of 425:34 end at NIU, now have blanked opponents for 274:50 since that time.
* Redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault has been in goal for the entire 274:50 of the current shutout streak ... Arsenault allowed the goals at NIU, with the first one snapping her personal streak of 380:34 ... that streak was the longest of her career and the fourth-longest in school history ... now, however, she is riding the second-longest streak of her career, and the seventh-longest by an individual in BG annals.
* Arsenault has six complete-match shutouts this season, tying her total for all of last year ... in fact, she is just one shutout away from matching the school's single-season record ... Erika Flanders set the record, with seven shutouts in 2002, while Ali Shingler matched that total in 2005.
* Arsenault now has 12 career shutouts ... she ranks third on that school list, trailing only Flanders (17 from 1999-2002) and Shingler (16 from 2001-05).
* BGSU trails Ohio, 8-2-2, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Falcons are 2-1-1 in the last four meetings ... BG is now 0-4-2 vs. the Bobcats at Chessa Field ... BG does have two wins at the field, against WMU and Central Michigan in the 2004 MAC Tournament.
* The Falcons are now 0-0-3 in overtime games this year, and BGSU is 17-14-22 all-time in OT ... after Friday's game, the Falcons now have an impressive mark of 7-1-12 in road contests that require OT.
* The game marked the eighth 0-0 tie in Falcon program history, and the second this season ... prior to this year, the last four scoreless ties all had come in MAC Tournament action ... BGSU's other 0-0 game in 2008 game at Oakland (Aug. 31).
