McDonald makes the team for the second consecutive year, having been named to the second team in 2007. Stephenson, named to the second team, is honored in her first year of eligibility.
McDonald maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a health science major. Stephenson, a finance major, also has a perfect 4.00 GPA in her BGSU career to date.
A native of Troy, Ohio (Troy HS), McDonald has played in 17 matches this season to date, making one start. She is sixth on the team in scoring with seven points, on three goals and an assist. McDonald scored goals in Falcon wins over IPFW (Sept. 5, Detroit (Sept. 19) and Buffalo (Oct. 26). She picked up her assist in BG's victory vs. Miami on Oct. 12.
Stephenson, who hails from Lexington, Ohio (Lexington HS), has eight points to rank fifth on the team. She scored goals in wins against Marshall (Sept. 14), Xavier (Sept. 21) and Western Michigan (Sept. 28), with the latter goal proving to be the game-winner in a 1-0 triumph in Kalamazoo. Stephenson assisted on the winning goals vs. UDM and Ball State (Oct. 10), with the helper in the BSU game coming in overtime. She has played in all 20 games this fall, making 17 starts.
McDonald is only the fourth Falcon to earn Academic All-District First-Team honors, joining Jill Conover, Keeley Dayton and Ali Shingler.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District University Division Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
The 2008-09 academic year marks the eighth time a women's soccer team has been selected. Prior to the 2001-02 academic year, women's soccer student-athletes were part of the Fall-Winter Sports At-Large ballot.
The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards, 11-5-4 overall, have clinched a home game in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. BGSU finished with a 6-3-2 conference record after Thursday's 1-1 tie with Toledo, and the Falcons placed fourth in the final MAC standings. BG will host fifth-seeded Western Michigan in quarterfinal-round action Sunday (Nov. 2) at Cochrane Field.
