BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University hockey coach Scott Paluch met with the media today at football's media day to discuss the upcoming 2008-09 season. BG will host RIT this Friday at the BGSU Ice Arena and Niagara on Saturday. Both faceoffs are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Coach Scott Paluch
(on reasons to be more optimistic this year)
"I think, number one, last year we did a lot of good things and had ourselves in position for an upper half finish - needed a point in the last week and didn't get it - but, most importantly, we've got 21 guys back from that team. It's a group with a lot of speed, skill, and they're extremely courageous. We're excited to get going."
(on whether or not anyone will emerge from this year's freshman class)
"We certainly hope so. I think we're always cautiously optimistic with freshmen in our league. When you look, so many players in our league, maybe 23 or 24 years old, making an impact...sometimes you've got to wait and see with some of the young guys, but the class so far has been fine. On Saturday, Nick Bailen was outstanding for us on defense and Bryan Potacco chipped in, so I think it's a class that has a chance to make an impact, but clearly, with 21 guys back, we want our experienced guys to lead the way.
(on building on last year's success at home)
"To really make a jump up in our league, you've got to be very consistent at home and win your home games. I think it's a trademark of a lot of good teams, although one interesting side note to that, Boston College won a national championship last year with a losing record at home. Might have been the first time it's ever happened. But programs like ourselves trying to make that next jump to the top level, winning the home games is important. We've always felt like we've got a good atmosphere here at home when it's rocking. The more we take care of business at home, the more people want to be a part of that atmosphere, so I think it all goes hand-in-hand for us."
