BOWLING GREEN, OHIO - An even strength goal by Nebraska-Omaha freshman John Kemp with just over five minutes left in the game squelched a Bowling Green rally and sent the Mavericks home a 5-3 winner Saturday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Falcons had battled back from a 3-1 deficit after two periods to tie the game on a power-play goal from junior Kai Kantola at the 8:31 mark. The Kantola goal followed a tally by sophomore David Solway at the 4:55 mark. The Falcons had all the momentum and had several excellent scoring opportunities before Kemp scored what turned out to be the game-winner. UNO added an empty-net score with just 21 seconds left.
BG scored the only goal of the first period as senior Brandon Svendsen knocked home a shot at the 10:02 mark from between the circles off a great pass from sophomore Dan Sexton. The score came on the power play for the Falcons ending an 0-for-18 streak with the man-advantage.
The Mavericks then controlled the second period from a scoring standpoint as they started the period with a power-play marker at 3:26. They then scored even strength tallies just 2:40 apart about midway through the period to take a 3-1 lead that they carried into the third period.
Bowling Green, much like Friday night, had a big advantage in shots. In the game Saturday, the Falcons had a 39-22 edge in shots after outshooting the Mavericks, 44-20, in the Falcons' 3-2 win in the first game of the weekend series Friday night.
The Falcons were two-of-four on the power play while UNO converted on one of their four chances with the man-advantage. Senior Jerad Kaufmann made 36 saves for the Mavericks while senior Jimmy Spratt had 17 for the Falcons.
By earning a split of the weekend series, UNO improves to 5-1-0 overall and 1-1-0-0 in the CCHA. Bowling Green, which will now begin preparations for a weekend series at Lake Superior, falls to 3-4-1 overall and 2-2-0-0 in conference play.
The line of Svendsen, Solway and Sexton accounted for 12 of the 16 points in the weekend series against Nebraska-Omaha, including scoring five of the six goals.
"We had a lot guys generating chances and Kaufmann (UNO goaltender Jerad) did a great job in goal for them," Bowling Green head coach Scott Paluch said. "We had a possession of about one minute in which we had two or three scoring chances and we got caught on the offensive side of the puck at the end of a shift and they went down and scored.
"I thought again we controlled a majority of the play and generated a lot of chances and I loved the way we stayed with the game and got it back to even. We had some terrific chances right after that, but they got the go-ahead goal."
