FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the second time this season, Bowling Green State University forward Jacob Cepis has been named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday (Feb. 4). The Parma, Ohio native had two goals and an assist in the Falcons' 5-2 win at Ohio State on Friday as he tied his career single-game high in the effort.
The three-point effort by Cepis on Friday led the Falcons to their 13th win of the season as they earned a two-game split with the Buckeyes, falling 4-2 on Saturday. BG is currently 13-13-0 on the year with a 10-10-0 record in the CCHA, where they currently sit in sixth-place.
On the season, Cepis has tallied 12 goals and 11 assists as his 23 points are second on the team to senior forward Derek Whitmore who has 26. He is the Falcons' third-leading freshman scorer already in the last eight years and the fourth in the last 10, trailing Jonathan Matsumoto's top total of 32 back in 2004-05 by just nine points.
The freshman forward tallied his second game-winning goal of the season in Friday's contest when he gave the Falcons a late two-goal lead in the second period. After he received a nice pass from defenseman Russ Sinkewich, Cepis split a pair of Buckeye defenders, before getting off a hard-wrister from the slot that beat OSU goaltender Dustin Carlson on his stick side as he was falling down. The goal gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead with just 1:22 remaining in the period.
It wouldn't take long for Cepis to add to that lead in the third as he picked up goal two on the evening just 49 seconds into the game's final 20 minutes. A failed Buckeye outlet pass deep in the OSU zone found the his stick in front of the goal where he proceeded to knock home his 12th goal of the season to give BG a 4-1 advantage.
Cepis also added a first period assist on BG's goal by forward Kai Kantola with just 41 seconds remaining until the first intermission, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Although he wouldn't find the scorer's sheet on Saturday, he finished his weekend with a plus/minus rating of plus-2 as Friday's game was his sixth multiple-point effort this year.
Cepis last tallied a three-point game back on Nov. 3rd when he picked up a goal and two assists, helping BG to a, 5-4, overtime win at home over Western Michigan.
Cepis and the Falcons will return to action at home this Friday and Saturday when BG hosts a two-game series with the University of Alaska. Faceoff for both nights is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. as both contests can be heard on WBGU 88.1 FM with Danny Nieves bringing you all the play-by-play.
