FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - The major postseason awards continued to roll in for the Bowling Green State University hockey team this week as senior tri-captain and forward Derek Whitmore was named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Second Team, announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 12). Whitmore, who just recently moved over 100 points for his career, leads the Falcons with 36 points this season as he has a team-high 27 goals, which ranks tied for second in the country.
Whitmore joins Jacob Cepis, Nick Eno and Kyle Page who have already been honored by the league this week with major postseason honors. Cepis and Eno were the first Falcons named to the league's All-Rookie team in three years on Monday (Mar. 10), while Page was named to the league's Scholar-Athlete team on Tuesday (Mar. 11).
Whitmore, a native of Rochester, N.Y., becomes the first Falcon to be honored with All-CCHA honors since Alex Foster was also named to the Second Team in 2005-06. He is the third Falcon to be named to the squad since 2000 and the seventh in the last 10 seasons.
The senior forward had a career-season in both points (36) and goals (27) this season as he scored 13 goals in each half of the regular-season, helping the Falcons to a seventh-place finish as they hosted their second home playoff series in the last four years. This past weekend he totaled three points (1-2-3) against Lake Superior State in the first round of the CCHA playoffs, leading the Falcons to the second round for the first time since 2001. BG's 18 wins this season were also the most by a Falcon squad in the last decade and the most since the 1995-96 campaign.
With his first point of the weekend against LSSU, Whitmore became just the 69th player in Falcon history to amass 100 career points, as his current career total of 102 ranks tied for 65th on the all-time school list. His 27 goals also gave him 70 for his career, which is the 19th-best total on the all-time list.
The 5-foot-10-inch forward averaged a point per game in the 36 games he dressed this season, missing just a single game with injury back in early December. In 28 conference games, he scored 30 points, including 23 goals, seven assists, five game-winning goals, 10 power-play goals and one short-handed marker. His 23 goals in conference play ranked tied for first in the league with Miami's Ryan Jones, his point total in CCHA play was then tied for fourth, while his 10 extra-man goals ranked third.
Overall, Whitmore's 36 points rank tied for seventh in the league with his 27 goals ranking tied for second and his 13 power-play goals ranking third. He tied MU's Jones for the most hat tricks in the league this season with three, which rank just two below the single-season school record of five set by Bob Dobek.
Whitmore's 27 goals this season were the most by a Falcon player since Mike Johnson scored 30 in the 1996-97 season. He had 22 of his goals in Falcon wins, as the Falcons are 13-7-0 on the year when he scores a point and 7-2 when he has multiple-points. In his four-year career, the Falcons are 34-29-4 when he scores and 16-7-1 when he scores twice in a game or more. He had a season-best four-game goal streak on two different occasions as he has accounted for 13 percent of his team's points and 26 percent of the team's total 102 goals.
The two-time CCHA Offensive Player of the Week will look to continue to put numbers when he and the Falcons battle the Miami RedHawks this weekend in the second round of the CCHA playoffs. Game one from MU's Steve Cady Arena will drop the puck at 7:35 p.m. All the action can be heard on WBGU 88. 1 FM.
