BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team began its spring schedule last weekend. The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards opened the spring portion of the schedule at Michigan Sunday (March 16), and BGSU will play eight more matches this spring, including a home tournament in April.
The Falcons, as mentioned, played at Michigan over the weekend, battling to a 1-1 tie with the Wolverines at Oosterbaan Field House. Katie Stephenson, a rising sophomore, scored BGSU's goal against the Maize and Blue.
The team's next action will come on March 29, when the Falcons head to Fort Wayne, Ind. BGSU will play three matches against Canadian club teams in a tournament hosted by IPFW, with Ajax, Erin Mills and Foothills providing the opposition.
BGSU will face a pair of Northeast Ohio teams the following weekend, meeting Youngstown State and Cleveland State on April 6. CSU will host the action.
Then, the Falcons will host a tournament of their own, on April 12. The Brown and Orange will meet Tiffin at 9:30 a.m. and Oakland at 1:30 p.m. during a full day of soccer at Cochrane Field and surrounding pitches. Central Michigan, CSU, Findlay, Grand Valley State, Kent State, Northern Kentucky and Ohio Northern join the Falcons, Dragons and Golden Grizzlies in the all-day tourney.
BGSU will head to Wright State for an evening contest vs. the Raiders on April 16. Four days later (April 20), worlds will collide as the present Falcons face BGSU greats from the program's first 11 years in the team's annual Alumnae Match.
Richards and the 2007 Falcons posted an overall record of 10-9-3 and went 6-5-0 in Mid-American Conference play. BGSU placed fourth in the MAC's regular-season standings, and advanced all the way to the championship game of the conference tournament for the fifth time in six years. Richards and assistant coach Scott Gloden lose the services of four seniors -- Danielle Cygan, Tiffany Hansen, Rachael Ross and Tiernay Tilford -- from that 2007 squad.
The fall 2008 schedule begins on August 22, with a game at Cincinnati. The Falcons' home opener is scheduled for August 31 against Michigan State.
