BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Seven different players scored a goal apiece as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team rolled to a 7-0 win over Tennessee Tech University Friday afternoon (Sept. 12). The non-conference match was held at Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-2-2 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-4-0.
Four Falcon players scored the first collegiate goal of their respective collegiate careers, including juniors Colleen Kordan and Carolyn Nesline and freshmen Emily Merritt and Katelyn Turner.
Seniors Gina Rossi and Corbie Yee and sophomore Jackie Tamerlano also found the back of the net in Friday's win. Yee added an assist, while freshman Megan Amann was the lone player with a multiple-assist match. Amann had assists on the Tamerlano and Turner goals.
No fewer than 27 different players saw action in the match, a school record. The seven different goalscorers also represents a new school record.
"Clearly, this was an outstanding team performance," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "It is not easy to score seven goals in any soccer game, much less to have them spread out among seven different players.
"The fact that we got 27 players into the game also shows the depth of the team, the willingness of everyone to play their roles, and the motivation of the players to achieve the team goals. We talked at halftime about trying to maintain the shutout and trying to dominate the game in terms of possession, and we also wanted to score more goals and win the second half. The coaching staff was very happy that we were able to achieve all of those goals."
The Falcons held a commanding 27-6 advantage in shot attempts, and BGSU took the first 13 shots of the game. Senior co-captain Brianne Eisenhard hit the woodwork twice in the game's first 17 minutes. Eisenhard's first such shot came off a scramble in the 18-yard box. She uncorked a low shot, with Golden Eagle goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker getting a piece of the ball. The shot squirted past Thacker, however, hitting the post and deflecting off the 'keeper again. But, a TTU defender was able to clear the ball.
Several minutes later, with a light rain falling, Eisenhard drilled a free kick off the crossbar. Freshman Alyssa Zuccaro had a good scoring chance less than a minute later, heading a cross toward goal. The shot was right at Thacker, however, who was able to come up with the save.
With just under 15 minutes left in the half, but Falcons finally broke through. Amann's left-side cross found the penalty area, with Yee and Thacker vying for the ball. The Falcon senior gained possession of the ball with her back to the goal, and slid a pass toward the unrushing Tamerlano. Tamerlano made no mistake, placing her shot low into the center of the goal.
Only 54 seconds after Tamerlano's goal, the Falcons struck again. Sophomore Meagan Moran was taken down on the left side of the box, and BG was awarded a penalty kick. Kordan neatly placed her shot into the lower left corner of the frame for a 2-0 Falcon lead.

Yee was very nearly involved in another scoring play less than five minutes later. This time, junior Faith Juillerat played a pass ahead to Yee, all alone on the right side of the penalty box. Thacker came all the way out of her net, and Yee slid a cross toward Turner in the center of the six-yard area. A Golden Eagle defender, however, was able to get to the ball just before Turner, clearing it out of danger for the time being.
But, less than two minutes later, Turner was again on the doorstep, and this time, the freshman extended the Falcons' lead. Classmate Amann brought the ball down the left side of the pitch, cut along the end line, made a move to elude a would-be defender and crossed the ball to a wide-open Turner. Turner headed the ball home for a four-goal Falcon lead.
After being outshot by a 14-2 count in the opening half, Tennessee Tech had two shots on goal early in the second half. Both shots came from Michelle Decker, and Falcon senior goalkeeper Christy Zabek was able to save both efforts. Zabek, who played the second half of the match, made four saves.
In the game's 63rd minute, Zuccaro again had a near-miss. Not long after returning to the match, Zuccaro played a ball out to Rossi on the left wing. The fifth-year senior's cross found the head of the freshman, but Zuccaro's effort sailed just high. Soon after, though, the Falcons increased the lead with a textbook goal.
Eisenhard played a pass to Juillerat on the right side of the pitch. Juillerat's cross found Nesline in the center of the field, and the BG junior uncorked a long shot that sailed over backup 'keeper Lauren Schaedig and into the net from nearly 30 yards out.
Rossi extended the advantage at the 73:44 mark. Junior Kaitlyn Kobe's forward ball sent Rossi down the left side of the field, past the BG bench. Rossi eluded no fewer than three defenders as she took the ball left-to-right across the box, and the fifth-year senior fired a ball into the upper right corner of the net.
Emily Merritt completed the scoring in the 78th minute, stealing the ball from a TTU defender deep in the Golden Eagles' end of the field, then firing a shot from close range. The ball deflected off a defender and past Schaedig, just inside the near (left) post.
Redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault picked up the win in goal for the Falcons, making one save before giving way to Zabek at the intermission.
BGSU held a 15-5 margin in shots on goal for the match. Both Thacker and Schaedig made four saves in 45 minutes of work.
"Not everyone played the same amount of time today, but the value of each player was definitely high, and each one of them contributed to the win," said Richards. "This was an excellent performance, and it has set us up for a good game on Sunday, which we are sure will provide us a stiff challenge."
The Falcons will continue a three-match homestand on Sunday (Sept. 14), facing Marshall University at Cochrane Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., and the game will be televised by BCSN in the Toledo area on a tape-delay basis.
FALCON NOTES
* BGSU's seven-goal total was the team's highest in over four years, since a 7-3 win over Duquesne on Aug. 27, 2004.
* The Falcons' goal total tied for the third-highest output in school history ... the record is 10 goals, vs. Youngstown State seven years ago (Oct. 3, 2001) ... BGSU scored nine goals against Robert Morris (Sept. 6, 1998), and Friday marked the fourth time that the Falcons had seven goals in a game.
* BGSU set two school records on Friday ... the seven different goalscorers was the most in a match in program history ... head coach Andy Richards also used 27 different players, the most to see action in a game in BGSU annals ... in fact, BGSU had never had as many as 27 players play in the same season prior to 2008.
* Prior to last Friday (Sept. 5), the Falcons had not scored more than three goals in a match since the 2005 season ... over the last three matches, however, BGSU has averaged 4.00 goals per game ... the Falcons won a 4-0 game at IPFW last Friday, then tied Ohio State, 1-1, two days later before downing Tennessee Tech.
* Senior Corbie Yee, BGSU's active career scoring leader, now has 38 points on 14 goals and 10 assists in her Falcon tenure ... she leads current team members in all three categories.
* Yee becomes only the sixth player in school history to reach double digits in both goals and assists ... that list can be found in the box on this page.
* With her three points on Friday, Yee moved into eighth place on the BGSU career scoring list ... she has moved past Janice Mentrup (37 points from 1997-2000) ... Yee is seventh in career goals and 12th in career assists at BG.
* Gina Rossi now has a team-leading seven points in 2008, on three goals and an assist ... she has nearly doubled her scoring total from the last two years combined ... Rossi had nine points as a freshman in 2004, then sat out the following year due to injury ... she had two points in both the 2006 and '07 seasons.
* Rossi now has career totals of eight goals and 20 points, tying her for second in both categories among active Falcons ... junior Stacey Lucas also had eight goals and 20 points.
* Freshman Megan Amann had the first two-assist game of her brief career ... she leads the team in that category, with three.
* The win was the Falcons' 50th at Cochrane Field ... since the inception of the program prior to the 1997 season, BGSU has a record of 50-51-8 at home ... the Brown and Orange will look to improve their all-time Cochrane Field winning percentage to .500 in Sunday's Marshall match ... the Falcons have not had a .500 home record since October of 1999 (12-12-1 after a loss to Central Michigan that year).
