CINCINNATI, Ohio - Senior Corbie Yee's goal -- just 19 seconds in -- held up as the game-winning score as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 road win over Xavier University Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21). The match, the Falcons' final non-conference contest of 2008, was held at the XU Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-2-2 on the year. BGSU is now unbeaten (5-0-1) in the last six games, and the Falcons have won the last four games, all by shutout. The Musketeers drop to 1-6-0 on the year.
Sophomore Katie Stephenson scored the Falcons' other goal, in the 72nd minute of play.
Redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault made five saves in the complete-game shutout win.
With only 19 seconds elapsed, Yee took a cross from senior Gina Rossi and converted, giving the Falcons a lead they would not relinquish. BGSU controlled the ball from the opening kickoff, meaning that the first time a Xavier player touched the ball was when it was retrieved from the back of the net.
The second goal came when Stephenson scored from close range, off a Stacey Lucas cross. Brianne Eisenhard also assisted on the Falcons' second goal.
"We had a fantastic start today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "It was a great goal, with good composure from Corbie, and Gina doing her part.
"We didn't push forward as we would have liked, to perhaps put the game away early, but I always felt like we were in control of the game. It was a good performance overall. Any time you get a win on the road, it is good.
"We were also happy to keep the shutout. It wasn't the greatest we've ever played, but that's also a sign of a good team -- to get a win when you're not quite playing your best. We are very happy with the progress we are making, and the way everyone on the team is contributing to the success."
The Falcons now prepare for the Mid-American Conference season, which begins next weekend. BGSU will head to the MAC's "West Coast" for a Friday (Sept. 26) game at Northern Illinois, before heading to Kalamazoo for a Sunday (Sept. 28) matchup with Western Michigan.
FALCON INDIVIDUAL NOTES
* Senior Corbie Yee's goal was the earliest goal in a game in program history ... prior to Sunday, the Falcons had scored two goals 22 seconds into a half ... both Jamie Eshleman (Oct. 17, 1997 vs. Kent State) and Kristy Coppes (Oct. 11, 2002 at Central Michigan) had achieved that feat, with both goals coming in the second half ... the earliest goal in the first half had been exactly one minute into the match, by Jill Conover at Northern Illinois nine years and three days ago (Sept. 18, 1999).
* Yee now has 16 career goals ... she has tied Britt Anderson (2002-05) for sixth place on the BGSU career list.
* Yee's goal at Xavier was the eighth game-winning goal of her career ... she is now tied for second on that BGSU career list, with Samantha Meister (8 GWG from 2002-05) ... Coppes holds the school records for both career goals (52) and GWG (14).
* Yee ranks eighth in BGSU history in career points ... she has 43 points through Sunday's action, on the 16 goals and 11 assists.
* Yee currently has a career-long four-game point streak ... she has scored all eight of her points this season in those four games, all wins.
* Sophomore Katie Stephenson has a three-game point-scoring streak, the longest of her career ... Stephenson has five points in that time, matching her point total for all of last year.
* Yee and fifth-year senior Gina Rossi are tied for the team scoring lead, with eight points apiece ... Yee and Rossi each have three goals to share team honors in that department.
* Alexa Arsenault picked up her fourth complete-match shutout of the season and the 10th of her career ... she has had those 10 shutouts in just 22 career starts ... Arsenault ranks third on that school list, trailing only Erika Flanders (17 shutouts from 1999-2002) and Ali Shingler (16 from 2001-05).
* Arsenault's personal shutout streak currently stands at 367:46, dating to the Ohio State game of Sept. 7 ... that streak is the longest of her career and ranks fourth on the BGSU list ... teammate Christy Zabek holds that record, with a scoreless streak of 544:48 to begin her career (Sept. 16, 2005 to Oct. 20, 2006).
FALCON TEAM NOTES
