Six Falcons Garner Academic All-MAC Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball senior trio once again led their fellow teammates as six Falcons garnered Academic All-MAC honors announced by the Mid-American Conference office today (Jan. 5). Seniors Kendra Halm, Chelsey Meek and Meghan Mohr were all named to the Academic All-MAC team, while teammates Sam Fish, Kaitlin Jackson and Shari Luther were all named Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention. Halm and Meek were two of seven players in the MAC two earn their second Academic All-MAC selection. The Falcons were the only team to have more than one player earn their second Academic All-MAC selection.
The 2008 Volleyball Academic All-MAC team is made up of 24 student-athletes with the number of honorees on the team set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
The Falcons three student-athletes on the Academic All-MAC team is the second most of any institution in the MAC only behind Ohio who earned four selections. Also earning three selections on the team was Miami.
The Falcon senior trio, Halm, Meek and Mohr led the team on the court and off the court all season as all three were also named to the All-MAC team before the MAC Tournament.

Halm, a Bucyrus, Ohio native and a criminal justice major with a 3.32 GPA earned her second Academic All-MAC honor as she was named to the team as a sophomore. Halm had another stellar season on the court being named first team All-MAC for the third consecutive season. She recorded double-digits kills in 24 of 34 matches, including a 10 match streak and double-digits in six of the last eight matches. She finished the season third in the MAC in hitting percentage, fourth in blocks and in the top 80 in the nation in hitting percentage and top 150 in blocks. Halm led the Falcons, the 51st team in the nation in hitting percentage with a .332 hitting percentage. In her final season she was named to three All-Tournament teams, including two MVPs and a MAC East Player of the Week selection. Halm became the 14th player in BG history to record 1,000 kills against Oakland (Oct. 9, 2008). She amassed 1,299 career kills, fourth in BG history. She also set a new BG record for career block assists with 443 career block assits, also sixth in MAC history and finished her career third in BG history for career blocks with 515, also ninth in MAC history. Halm set new BG records for blocks and block assists in a three set match with a career high 14 blocks and 13 block assists against Florida A&M.

Meek, a Bowling Green, Ohio native and early childhood education major with a 3.82 GPA earned her second consecutive Academic All-MAC selection. Meek was unstoppable on defense leading the Falcons defensive attack the entire season. She earned second team All-MAC honors and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team honors earlier this season after finishing her senior campaign ranked 27th in nation and second in the MAC in digs. Meek had another record breaking season setting a new MAC record for career digs with 2,287 career digs, also holding the BG career record and becoming the first Falcon ever to record 2,000 career digs as she picked up her 2,000th dig against Buffalo (Oct. 11, 2008). She also set a new BG record for digs in a season (663) and became the all-time leader in the nation for consecutive matches of 10-plus digs (91), including 16 matches of 20-plus digs. Meek was named to three All-Tournament teams, earned a MAC Co-East Player of the Week selection and named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Mohr, an Elida, Ohio native and early childhood education major with a 3.28 GPA earned her first Academic All-MAC team selection. Mohr was a consistent force on both ends of the court for the Falcons all season earning her second consecutive second team All-MAC honor. She led BG, the 87th team in national in kills with 409 kills. Mohr tallied a team high 10 double-doubles, including 22 double-digit kill matches marked by a 10 match streak of double-digit kills and 11 double-digit dig matches. She ended her collegiate career on a high note with four straight double-digit kill matches, including two with 20-plus kills. At the MAC Tournament, Mohr recorded a tournament high 58 kills and posted the second best kill average (4.83 kills per set), only behind Ohio's Ellen Herman. Mohr clipped a .390 at the MAC Tournament, the second best hitting percentage of any player on the a team finishing in the top four of the tournament. She was the only player at the MAC Tournament to finish in the top 10 of three statistical categories, finishing second in kills with 58 kills averaging 4.83 kills per set, sixth in hitting percentage with a .390 and eighth in service aces with five averaging 0.42 per set. Mohr finished the season 10th in MAC play in kills and service aces and earned three All-Tournament honors, including at the MAC Tournament.
The Falcons also had three players named Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention, Fish, Jackson and Luther.
Fish, a North Branch, Michigan native and sport management major with a 3.57 GPA ran the offense for the Falcons all season. She finished her sophomore campaign with 1,347 assists the second most in a season in BG history. Fish recorded double-digit assists in every match, including a season high 59 twice. She posted nine double-doubles on the season the second most on the team, including four consecutive. Fish finished the season seventh in the MAC in assists and in the top 90 in the nation.
Jackson, a Toronto, Ontario native and pre-human movement science major with a perfect 4.00 GPA was also named Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention. Jackson played in every match for the Falcons recording two double-digit dig performances. She recorded a season high nine kills four times and a career high five blocks.
Luther, a Colgate, Wisconsin native and general business major with a 3.95 GPA was named Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention. Luther started in the middle for the Falcons in every match. She recorded six double-digit kill performances, including a career high 13 kills twice and recorded career high six blocks four times. Luther opened the season with a perfect performance and career high .524 hitting percentage (11-0-21). She finished her sophomore season ninth in the MAC in blocks.
The Academic All-MAC honor is awarded to a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
