With the win, the Huskies improve to 10-6-1 overall and 3-2-0 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 2-11-3 and 1-3-1, respectively.
Luis De La Cerda got the visitors on the board exactly 19 minutes into the match, and Hoyos scored at 31:09 to give Northern a two-goal lead at the half. Hoyos' final goal came at the 77:25 mark.
NIU goalkeeper Jordan Godsey made seven saves en route to the shutout. Falcon freshman 'keeper Dylan Schoettley had three saves in Saturday's match.
Just 90 seconds before Northern's first goal, the Huskies had threatened, only to be thwarted by the BGSU defense. A shot by NIU's Josh Karsten was blocked by Falcon junior Thomas McLean, and on the ensuing corner kick, Schoettley leaped high to grab a crossing attempt.
But, with exactly 26 minutes left before halftime, De La Cerda hit a half-volley into the upper-left corner of the net, giving the Huskies a lead they would not relinquish.
BGSU had only three shot attempts in the first half against a stiff wind. One of those shot attempts came with 20 minutes remaining in the period. Senior Tyler Deal crossed the ball toward redshirt sophomore Chris Jurtovski. Jurtovski shielded a Huskie defender away from the ball with his body as the cross sailed past both of them, then tracked down the ball and hit a nifty turnaround shot. But, the wind took some of the steam off the shot, and Godsey grabbed it.
Karsten nearly doubled the Huskies' lead with just over 15 minutes remaining before halftime, as his header caromed off the corner of the frame, where the left goalpost meets the crossbar. But, just over a minute later, NIU indeed found the back of the net.
DeLa Cerda played a diagonal ball to Hoyos at the top of the penalty box. Hoyos cut the ball to his right and hit a low shot from 18 yards that found the left side of the goal. The Huskies took that 2-0 lead into the half.
Northern Illinois had advantages of 11-3 in shot attempts, 4-1 in shots on goal and 5-0 in corner kicks in the first half. The Falcons, with the wind at their backs in the second period, were able to even some of those categories, but could not get onto the scoreboard.
The Falcons had a 9-6 advantage in total shots, including a 6-2 lead in shots on goal, in the second half. And, BGSU had six corner kicks to the Huskies' one in those final 45 minutes.
Northern's first shot of the half came with 28 minutes left, as Brad Horton took a long throw in that Tim King was able to head backward toward the goal. But, Schoettley made a leaping grab.
At the other end, senior Gavin Dozier took a pass from classmate Hunter Van Houten, got the ball to the end line and hit a crossing ball. But, an NIU player headed the ball over the line for a corner kick, and the Huskies were able to clear the ball away after that CK.
Twenty one minutes remained when freshman Joey D'Agostino fired a shot from approximately 20 yards out. The ball hit a Northern defender, but Godsey was able to react in time to lunge the other way and make the save.
Northern got some insurance with 12:35 remaining, when Hoyos scored after an impressive individual effort. He made a long run past several Falcon defenders into the box, then deposited the ball past the charging Schoettley and into the far (right) corner of the net.
The Falcons had several chances in the late going, forcing Godsey to make several saves in the final moments. A left-to-right ball by senior Cameron Hepple hit the same spot where Karsten's first-half header had hit, the upper-left corner of the goal, but the ball bounded away.
With seven minutes left, D'Agostino nearly got through the last line of defense, but the Falcons were whistled for offsides.
Just over a minute remained when a long free kick by Deal found Hepple in the six-yard box, near the right post. But, Godsey was able to block Hepple's shot out of bounds for a corner kick.
Off of that corner, redshirt sophomore Robert Barker's pass was redirected on target by Van Houten, forcing Godsey to make a diving save in the final minute of the match.
For the game, the Huskies had a 17-12 advantage in total shots, but the Falcons had seven shots on goal to NIU's six. Each team wound up with six corners.
The game was the Falcons' annual PINK OUT match, in support of breast cancer awareness. The team wore special pink Falcons T-shirts during pre-game warmups.
BGSU will close the regular season with a pair of home matches, facing Detroit on Wednesday (Nov. 4) and Florida Atlantic Saturday (Nov. 7).
