Falcon Swim Team Falls Short in MAC Opener

Young Falcon squad shows potential in 154-119 loss to EMU
Bowling Green, Ohio--Despite strong individual performances by the young Orange and Brown squad, the Falcons fell to the EMU Eagles, 154-119, at Jones Pool. Regardless of the outcome, the Falcons recorded 18 top-three finishes; among those were three individual and two relay victories.
Among those finishing in top-three spots was senior captain, Meg Richardson. Richardson, who holds BGSU's top times in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (23.82) and second in the 100-yard freestyle events .
Adding first-place finishes to the Falcons record was junior Sarah Burston and sophomore VIcky Yu. Burston set the pace in the 200-yard IM, with a first-place time of 2:11.34, while adding points for the Falcons with a third place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.81). Yu picked up first-place points for the Falcons in the 100-yard butterfly (57.85). Yu also claimed the second place spot int the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.70) and third place in the 200-yard IM (2:14.69).
Four Falcon freshmen showed strong performances against EMU, claiming five of the 18 top-three finishes. Freshman Alexis Kain captured two second place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events in her first MAC meet as a Falcon. Kain tapped in at 1:06.13 and 2:27.00, respectively. Emily Bennet snagged a second place finish for the Falcons in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.78), while teammates Emily Waller and Alexa Harris each swam to third place finishes. Waller found her third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.46) while Harris tapped into third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.08).
Orange and Brown relay squads added to the Falcons efforts, claiming two first place finishes and one second place finish. In the first event of the meet, Bennet, Kain, Yu and Richardson snagged the top-spot in the 200-yard medley relay. Likewise, the Falcons ended the meet with relay success as BGSU's 'A' relay, made-up of Richardson, Bennet, Waller and Sarah Reinink took first place. Teammates Carrie Enright, Andrea Brown, Jamie Akenberger and Marie Pope tagged in to second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Falcon success was ebbed by the Eagles diving squad. EMU claimed uncontested victories in both the one- and three-meter diving events.
The Falcons are back in action today against the Ball State Cardinals at 1:00 p.m. at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
