Falcon Volleyball Team Adds Two During Early Signing Period
November 12, 2009 | Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green volleyball coach Denise Van De Walle has announced the signing of two players during the early signing period. Danielle Tonyan, from McHenry, Ill., and Paige Penrod, from Circleville, Ohio, have both signed National Letters of Intent to begin their collegiate careers at Bowling Green in 2010.
“Both Danielle and Paige are explosive pin hitters who will add a lot of power to our offense immediately,” Van De Walle said. “I don't think it will take them long at all to get adjusted to the college game. I can't wait to coach them.”
Tonyan, at 6-foot, plays at McHenry High School. She posted 334 kills in 2009 and led her team to a 21-13 record. During her final three years of high school volleyball, she recorded 820 kills. She was named team Most Valuable Player in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and was named to the Stevenson All-Tournament Team three times. She was named to the Grayslake All-Tournament Team twice, as well as the DeKalb All-Tournament Team. She was a Northwest Herald All-Area player as well.
“Danielle is one terrific person,” Van De Walle said. “She and I spent a lot of time talking during the recruiting process and what I learned about her is that she is special. She is passionate about the game and cares deeply about being the best that she can be. She takes it very seriously and wants to excel right away. She is a very gifted left-handed hitter that attacks the ball extremely hard. She is a lot like our former stand-out, Meghan Mohr. I'm really looking forward to having her in the program.”
Penrod, at 5-foot-9, plays at Logan Elm High School. Her team is currently 27-0, finished the year ranked No. 3 in the state, and making a run for the school's first state championship this weekend. She set the state record for kills in a season with 636 as a junior as well as kills in a match with 45. She has well over 500 kills this year and was just named first team all-state after being a second team all-state player as a junior.
“Paige is used to winning,” Van De Walle said. “She is another player that brings a lot of power to the floor. She is a very dynamic hitter with a big jump who has not reached her potential. I think Paige is going to turn some heads right away and she is a big-time point scorer. We've seen Paige take over a match single-handedly. She's used to getting every single ball and having to score. It will be a lot of fun to have her kind of power on the left side since Corey Domek is a senior. I'm really happy that Paige is joining the Falcon family. When we met her, I knew we were a great fit for her and I'm so thankful it all worked out!”
Van De Walle is in her 27th season as head coach of the Bowling Green volleyball team and has consistently guided the team near the top of the Mid-American Conference. Prior to 2009, the team had three consecutive 20-win seasons and Van De Walle currently sits at 498 career victories, needing just two to become the first coach in MAC history to win 500.
