Falcon Hockey Signs Three to National Letters of Intent
November 24, 2009 | Ice Hockey
Preparing for the departure of ten seniors from this year's team and continuing to build on the Falcon hockey tradition, Bowling Green State University interim hockey head coach Dennis Williams has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Mike Montrose (Howell, Mich), Chad Sumsion (Woodstock, Ont.) and Bryce Williamson (Seba Beach, Alb.) have all signed to play for the Falcons for the 2010-11 season.
“We lose a big and very good group of seniors this year but you always look for another guy that can add to the team and give you another weapon,” said Williams.
Williams now has three new weapons to expect for Fall 2010 after the early NLI signing period.
Mike Montrose - Defense, 5-11, 182, Howell, Michigan / Tri-City (USHL)
Montrose was a two year veteran of the Waterloo Black Hawks and is currently a member of the Tri-City Storm, both of the USHL. As a member of the Storm this season, he has seven assists as a defenseman in 16 games, including two against Team USA in his last two games. He also hails from the same hometown (Howell, Mich.) as current Falcon goaltender, Nick Eno.
In his time with Waterloo, he and his team were twice the runners-up of the USHL in 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2008-09, Montrose teamed up with current BGSU Falcon forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas to help the team to a fourth place finish in the regular season. Montrose and his team led the league in goals scored (246) as he added five assists en route to a Clark Cup finals appearance. The Black Hawks swept the first two playoff series before being eliminated in the final round in the fifth game of a best-of-five series.
During the 2007-08 season, Montrose aided the Black Hawks towards a 38-17-5 overall record and a second place regular season finish while allowing the fewest power-play goals (41) and fewest power-play shots on goal (291). In 32 games, he scored one goal and three assists with Waterloo.
Williams on Montrose: ”Mike is a really good skating, mobile defenseman. Mike sees the ice well and has a good first pass. Mike is a veteran defenseman of the USHL, which is one of the top leagues out there. Mike plays with an edge and we expect him to compete and make our 'D' core better. We really expect Mike to come in and compete for ice time as a freshman.”
Chad Sumsion - Forward, 6'1, 200, Woodstock, Ontario / Newmarket (CCHL)
Sumsion is currently in his second year with the Newmarket Hurricanes of the Central Canadian Hockey League (CCHL) and is in the process of accumulating numbers that may belittle his 62-point season of 2008-09.
As a rookie with the Hurricanes Sumsion made an immediate impact with Newmarket, posting a 10-8--18 line and five consecutive multiple point games through the first ten contests with his new team. On the season, he led the team in goals (28), assists (34) and points (62) in 2008-09. He also had a team-leading 13 power-play goals, double the amount his next nearest teammate had. In nine playoff games, Sumsion posted a team-high 13 points and nine assists before exiting in the second round of the then-OJHL championship tournament.
Currently, Sumsion is 24 games into his second season with Newmarket and has 19 goals (team-high) and 19 assists (tied team-high) for a total of 38 points on the young season. He was named the CCHL Player of the Month for September when in seven games he has scored four goals and seven assists for eleven total points. Serving as the Hurricane's team captain, he also leads the team in power-play scores with eight this year.
Williams on Sumsion: “Chad will be able to come in and help with our special teams. Chad has great vision. His hands are very good and he sees the ice well. Chad has been a point producer at every level he has played at. That's what we hope to see him do, put up points for us and help with our offensive side of the puck. Chad is physically ready to make that transition to college hockey.”
Bryce Williamson - Forward, 6'0, 172, Seba Beach, Alberta / St. Albert (AJHL)
Williamson is currently in his third season with the St. Albert Steel of the Alberta Junior Hockey league. In 2008-09, he was in the top-10 in a variety of offensive categories.
Last season, the Seba Beach (Alb.) native led the AJHL in power-play goals scored (19), finished eighth in goals scored (32) and tenth in points scored (70). In that season, he began the year having scored at least one point in 14 consecutive games, seven of which he scored two or more points. He scored points in 26 of his first 27 games that season after sustaining a 12-game point scoring streak immediately following the previous streak's end.
In his first season with the Steel (2007-08), Williamson recorded a 61-point season after scoring a 29 goals, twelfth in the AJHL, and 32 assists. In nine playoff games over two seasons, he has netted two goals and eight assists.
After not recording a point in the opener this season, Williamson went on a 17-game point scoring streak in which he also had three games with four points and six games with three or more points in that span. He had already been named the AJHL Player of the Week for Sept. 28 after a five goal and seven assist performance over three games. Williamson currently ranks in the top-five in three categories. Williamson is fourth in points (48), assists (29) and fifth in goals (19) in the league. He also tied for sixth in points per game (1.7).
Williams on Williamson: We're getting a veteran hockey player in Bryce [Williamson] and he will be a mature freshman. Bryce is the leading scorer on his team and led the league in power play goals last year with 19. Bryce has a great stick and is another guy that we want to come in help us with the offensive side of the puck. Bryce and Chad [Sumsion] compete very hard and want to win.”
With ten seniors on the current Bowling Green roster, there is still work to be done preparing for more roster spots to open after the 2009-10 season's end. The recruiting trail continues for the BG staff as coach Williams continues the hunt for the next potential member of the Falcon hockey family.
“Our whole goal is to find top student-athletes. Our job here is to find good hockey players but also good students and good community-oriented young men. We have a process of filling a lot more holes but we're out there grinding and working hard finding those players that we feel will represent the school and the community with a positive image.”
“We lose a big and very good group of seniors this year but you always look for another guy that can add to the team and give you another weapon,” said Williams.
