THREE-MENDOUS
Yes, it's early – the Falcons have played only five games this season to date ... but, through those five games, BGSU is on an NCAA-record pace for three-point field goals made ... the Falcons have hit 52 treys, an average of 10.4 per game ... the NCAA Division-I record is 9.9 three-point field goals per game, set by Villanova in the 2007-08 season.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons are 3-2 on the young season, and BGSU is riding a two-game winning streak entering the Saint Francis contest ... BG opened the 2009-10 campaign with three games in the Preseason NIT, starting with a 76-41 win over Chicago State at venerable Anderson Arena (Nov. 13) ... that victory gave the Falcons a quarterfinal matchup with Ohio State (Nov. 15), and the third-ranked Buckeyes posted a 91-72 win in Columbus ... then, the Brown and Orange headed to Marist and suffered a 70-65 setback (Nov. 21) ... BGSU bounced back with a road win, 81-66, Tuesday night (Nov. 24) at Oakland, before downing UNC Greensboro, 80-51, on Friday (Nov. 27).
• BGSU returns 10 letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's team that posted the second-highest win total in school and MAC history ... the Falcons went 29-5 overall, including a 15-1 MAC record, in 2008-09 ... the Brown and Orange won a fifth consecutive conference regular-season title and advanced to the third round of the Postseason WNIT.
• The Falcons had just one senior on the roster a year ago, and Lindsey Goldsberry ended her career as the winningest basketball player – man or woman – in MAC history ... BG had a record of 114-20 in her four years, an average of 28.5 wins per season.
• Through five games, junior Tracy Pontius leads a balanced Falcon scoring attack, with 13.8 points per game ... she also has 3.5 rebounds and a team-high 4.2 assists per contest, and also leads the Falcons with 13 three-point field goals.
• Junior Lauren Prochaska and senior Tamika Nurse have 13.6 and 12.8 ppg, respectively ... Prochaska leads the Falcons in rebounding (6.4 rpg) ... she is second in blocked shots (0.8 bpg) and third in assists (3.6 apg) ... Nurse has 3.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game, and is second on the team with 12 three-pointers made.
• Senior Tara Breske has scored 9.0 points per game, while junior Jen Uhl has scored 8.8 ppg ... Breske, who sat out the UNC Greensboro game with an injury suffered at Oakland, has 4.3 rebounds and a team-leading 1.0 blocks per game ... she also paces the Falcons in steals (2.0 spg) ... Uhl is shooting a team-best .654 percent from the field, and has gone 7-of-13 (.538) from long range to date.
• Junior Maggie Hennegan and sophomore Jessica Slagle have 5.0 and 4.0 ppg, respectively ... Hennegen has 5.0 rebounds per game to rank second on the team ... Slagle is fourth on the Falcons in assists, with 2.0 helpers per game.
• The list of returnees in 2009-10 includes three seniors – Breske, Laura Bugher and Sarah Clapper – along with five juniors ... Breske started all 34 games in the post last season.
• The returnees in the junior class include a pair of highly-decorated players in Prochaska and Pontius ... Prochaska, a wing, was the 2009 MAC Player of the Year, while Pontius, a point guard, was an honorable-mention selection to the Associated Press All-America Team ... both Pontius and Prochaska earned All-MAC First-Team honors in 2008-09.
• Juniors Uhl, Chelsea Albert and Kelly Zuercher also return ... Uhl started the final 13 games of the year at a forward spot ... sophomores Slagle and Maribeth Giese round out the returning letterwinners.
• Two other players get to suit up in a BG uniform for the first time ... Nurse, a fifth-year senior (Univ. of Oregon), and Hennegan, a redshirt junior (Saint Louis Univ.), participated in practices at BGSU last season, but sat out the year after transferring from other NCAA Division-I schools.
• Five newcomers also join the program in 2009-10 ... that list includes a quartet of freshmen in Simone Eli, Allison Papenfuss, Chrissy Steffen and Jessie Tamerlano ... Danielle Havel also joins the program, but will sit out this season after transferring from DePaul University ... she will retain three seasons of eligibility.
• Nurse, Pontius and Prochaska each have started all five games to date ... Hennegan and Breske have made four starts apiece, while Uhl has been in the starting lineup for each of the last two games.
• Through five games, the Falcons are shooting .439 from the field, .409 from three-point land and .780 from the free-throw line ... BG's opponents are shooting .410 overall, .354 from long range and .761 from the stripe.
THREE-MENDOUS, PART II
As mentioned earlier, the Falcons have made 10.4 three-point field goals per game ... BGSU has made at least eight triples in each of this year's five games, including four games with 10 or more ... the Falcons had a total of nine games with at least 10 triples last season.
A SCHOOL RECORD? WE MAY NEVER KNOW
Falcon head coach Curt Miller played a total of 15 players in Friday's (Nov. 27) win over UNC Greensboro ... that total is the highest in over 25 years ... none of Miller's first eight teams at BGSU had more than 14 players on the active roster ... the last team to have as many as 15 players see action was the 1985-86 squad ... the '84-5 Falcons also had 15 players, while the 1983-84 team – like the 2009-10 team – had 16 players who saw action in at least one game.
SHOOTING WELL + REBOUNDING WELL = WINNING? MAKES SENSE
At the risk of oversimplifying things, a team that has a better field-goal percentage and more rebounds than the opponent is going to have a good chance to win ... when shooting 50 percent or better from the field, the Falcons are a perfect 45-0 in the Curt Miller Era ... and, BGSU is 105-11 when outrebounding the opponent during Miller's first eight-plus years.
ALONG THOSE LINES ...
BGSU has outrebounded the opponents in four of the first five games this year, and the Falcons have shot 50% or better in each of the last two games ... BG has shot 53.6% from the floor in those two games, while averaging 80.5 points per game in the wins over Oakland and UNC Greensboro.
FREE-THROW SHOOTING HAS BEEN A STRENGTH
The Falcons are shooting 78.0 percent from the field this season, continuing a trend of success from the stripe ... last year, BGSU had a free-throw percentage of 79.4, a rate that ranked fourth in the nation and was the 15th-highest figure in NCAA Division-I history.
FREE-THROW SHOOTING, PART II
Junior Lauren Prochaska is shooting 87.5 percent this year to date ... last season, Prochaska led the nation with a 93.3 success rate from the line ... that was the 11th-best single-season performance in NCAA Division-I history ... Prochaska was 167-of-179 from the stripe last year ... none of the 10 players listed above her attempted more than 118 free throws.
20 GAMES OF 20
Junior Lauren Prochaska scored a game-high 20 points in the win over UNC Greensboro ... that marked her 20th career game of 20 points or more as a Falcon ... Prochaska has scored in double digits in 65 of her 73 career games to date.
PROCHASKA MOVING UP BGSU SCORING LIST
Junior Lauren Prochaska enters the Saint Francis game ranked 18th on the BGSU career scoring list ... Prochaska has a total of 1,158 points in her Falcon tenure ... her next target on that list is 17th-place Andrea Nordmann, who had 1,164 points from 1989-93.
FALCONS LOOKING TO BE ROAD WARRIORS IN DECEMBER
The Falcons' game vs. Saint Francis, as mentioned, concludes a brief two-game homestand ... following Tuesday's game, BGSU will hit the road for five consecutive contests, taking on Vanderbilt (Friday), Detroit (Nov. 9), Saint Bonaventure (Dec. 12), Canisius (Dec. 19) and Youngstown State (Dec. 21) ... BG will finally return home to face Appalachian State on Wednesday, Dec. 23 ... after the Canisius game on Dec. 19, the Falcons will have played as many games in the state of New York as in venerable Anderson Arena.
LAST TIME OUT
Junior Lauren Prochaska scored a game-high 20 points to help the Falcons to an 80-51 victory over UNC Greensboro Friday (Nov. 27) at Anderson Arena ... senior Tamika Nurse had 16 points in the win ... fifteen different BGSU players saw action in the game, with none playing over 28 minutes ... the Falcons shot over 50 percent in each half en route to a 53.8% rate for the evening ... for the fourth time in this season's five games, BGSU hit double digits in three-point field goals made ... the Brown and Orange went 11-of-23 from beyond the arc ... Nurse went 4-of-5 from three-point range, while Prochaska was 4-of-7 from long distance ... Prochaska and Nurse were the only two players to score in double digits for the Falcons, but a total of six of their teammates scored between five and eight points ... freshman Allison Papenfuss had the first eight points of her young career, while senior Laura Bugher and juniors Maggie Hennegan and Jen Uhl had six apiece ... Kendra Smith led the Spartans with 12 points, while Amanda Leigh added nine points and Lakiah Hyson eight ... the Falcons made five of the first six shots of the night, enabling BG to lead from wire to wire ... the home team had an 11-point lead at the half, and the Spartans were within 10 points before BG went on an 8-0 run to take a 54-36 lead midway through the half ... those eight points were part of a 19-3 run that pushed the lead over 25 points with 10 minutes left in the game.
SCOUTING SAINT FRANCIS
Saint Francis will enter Tuesday's game with an overall record of 0-4 ... in their most recent game, however, the Red Flash gave 20th-ranked Pittsburgh a scare ... SFU lost by five points, 75-70 on Tuesday (Nov. 24), and had a potential game-tying three-pointer bounce off the rim with just 28 seconds left ... the team's other games were at home vs. Delaware and at Marquette and Lehigh ... junior guard Samantha Leach paces three double-digit scorers, with 12.0 points per game, and ranks third on the team with 4.0 rebounds per contest ... senior guard Britney Hodges has 11.3 ppg, while junior guard Allison Daly has 10.3 ppg ... sophomore guard Quinessa Johnson (5.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and senior F/C Janie Killian (1.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg) have joined the aforementioned three players in the starting lineup in each of the first four games ... the Red Flashes returned eight letterwinners, including all five starters, from last year's team that finished 15-17 overall and 11-7 in Northeast Conference play ... head coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl has a record of 21-44 in her third season as a collegiate head coach, all in Loretto ... the school's athletics web site is GoRedFlash.com.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Saint Francis, 3-0, in the all-time series between the teams ... BGSU has won two meetings in Western Pennsylvania and one inside Anderson Arena ... last season, Lauren Prochaska scored 32 points, a career high at the time, as the Falcons posted a 98-74 win over the Red Flash in Loretto (Nov. 25, 2008) ... in the only previous game at "The House That Roars," BGSU picked up a 77-55 victory four years ago (Nov. 21, 2005) ... that was the return match of the teams' home-and-home series, as the Falcons had posted a come-from-behind win in overtime, 80-74, the previous year (Dec. 18, 2004).
FALCONS PICKED TO WIN MAC TITLES IN 2009-10
The BGSU women's basketball team has been picked to win both the MAC's East Division and the conference tournament in 2010, according to the league's preseason poll ... the poll was released Oct. 28 by the MAC office ... Additionally, juniors Lauren Prochaska and Tracy Pontius were selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team ... the Falcons received 22 of the 36 votes to win the East Division ... BG was picked ahead of – in order – Kent State, Miami, Akron, Ohio and Buffalo ... BGSU has won five consecutive MAC regular-season titles ... Toledo was picked to win the West Division, followed by Ball State, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan.
TOUGH CROWD
The Falcons' early-season schedule has been difficult, to say the least ... BGSU's game at Oakland (Nov. 24) concluded a three-game road trip, in which the three opponents averaged 28.0 wins a season ago ... the first two foes, third-ranked Ohio State and Marist, each posted 29 victories last year, as did the Falcons ... OU went 26-7 in 2008-09 ... all three schools – like BG – advanced to national postseason play ... the Falcons' first four opponents of the season – Chicago State, OSU, Marist and Oakland – posted a total of exactly 100 wins last season.
THAT'S A RARITY
In the Marist game (Nov. 21), the Falcons lost despite making more three-point field goals, hitting more free throws and pulling down more rebounds than the Red Foxes ... BGSU had not lost a game when leading in all three of those categories in the Curt Miller Era ... in fact, such a phenomenon had not taken place in over a decade, since the Falcons lost at Northern Illinois (Feb. 23, 1999) on a shot at the buzzer in the final game of the regular season.
THEY'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE
The Falcons started the 2009-10 season with a 1-2 record ... that had not happened since – well, since last year ... in fact, BG began 2008-09 with an 0-2 mark, suffering double-digit losses at Temple and Valparaiso ... then, the Brown and Orange proceeded to reel off a school-record 25 consecutive wins, en route to a 29-5 overall mark.
PURA VIDA!
Head coach Curt Miller and the Falcons jump-started their season in August, heading to Costa Rica on the first foreign tour in program history ... the Falcons benefitted from four games vs. local competition, in addition to 10 days of practices leading up to the tour ... in addition to the practices and games, the 12 players (the 10 returnees from 2008-09, plus the two transfers who sat out last season at BGSU) were able to bond together through a week and a half of diverse experiences, including whitewater rafting, zip-lining through the rainforest and hiking on a volcano.
JUST AS SUCCESSFUL IN THE CLASSROOM
The Falcons had one of the most successful seasons in program history on the court in 2008-09 ... head coach Curt Miller's program had one of its most successful campaigns in the classroom as well ... BGSU was ranked fifth in the entire nation on the WBCA's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for 2008-09 ... the awards recognized teams throughout the country that had the highest grade point averages for 2008-09 ... as a team, the Falcons had a GPA of 3.470 in '08-09 ... BGSU was the only MAC program on the list, and the Falcons were also the only program from the state of Ohio in the Division-I Top 25.
TICKET SALES ARE ROLLING ALONG
As of Monday (Nov. 30), a total of 583 women's basketball season tickets had been sold for 2009-10 ... according to available information, that is a new record ... the previous best had been a total of 491 season tickets sold two years ago (2007-08) ... as recently as 2005-06, the total of BGSU women's basketball season tickets sold was just 62.
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, having closed the month of November with a pair of wins, will open December with a second-straight home game ... the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller will conclude a brief homestand with Tuesday's (Dec. 1) game against Saint Francis University ... tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena (3,500) ... following Tuesday's game, the Falcons will hit the road for five-straight contests, including three against teams that advanced to national postseason play a year ago ... Miller and his staff returned 10 letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's club that won the Mid-American Conference's regular-season title for a fifth-straight season ... BGSU ended the 2008-09 campaign with an overall record of 29-5 (15-1 MAC) and advanced to the third round of the Postseason WNIT.
