Richardson captures four first-place finishes
Bowling Green, Ohio--Fighting for their second win of the weekend, the Bowling Green State University women's swim team lost to the 2008-09 defending MAC champions, 165-129, at Cooper Pool. With this loss, the Falcons record drops to 1-3. Despit the loss, senior Meg Richardson found first-place success in four events.
The first event of the meet was the 200-yard medley relay. Though the Falcons and Redhawks swam neck-to-neck for a majority of the race, the Falcons reigned victorious as Richardson led her relay squad to a first-place finish. Also in the winning relay were Alexa Harris, Alexis Kain and Vicky Yu.
One event later, the Orange and Brown took first and third in the 200-yard freestyle. Freshman Emily Bennet continues to make a name for herself, touching in for first-place (1:53.71), while teammate Emily Waller nabbed the third-place spot. This win is Bennest's third first-place win in the 200-yard freestyle, this season.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, freshman Alexis Kain swam into second with a time of 1:06.46, followed closely by teammate Amanda Rom, who touched in for third in 1:07.33.
Sophomore Vicky Yu was again triumphant in the 200-yard butterfly, touching in at 2:07.70. With three Redhawk swimmers trailing Yu by only one stroke, Yu pulled out in the final 25 yards, taking the lead by more than one body length, and out-swimming the closest Redhawk swimmer by three secons. The 50-yard freestyle came next, giving Richardson another chance for victory. The Falcon captain took the opportunity and sprinted into first in 24.05. Teammate Emily Bennet was right on her tail, finishing in third with a time of 24.55, only two one-hundredths of a second behind the second-place Redhawk.
Directly after the one-meter diving event, Richardson was back at the block, ready to take her third win for the night in the 100-yard freestyle. In this event, the Falcons swam to a one-two-three victory with Richardson setting the pace for first in 52.31, followed by Bennet in second in 53.05 and junior Carrie Enright in third in 54.05.
The 200-yard backstroke followed, in which the Falcons found second- and thid-place success. Harris took the second-place spot (2:09.47), while freshman Jamie Akenberger finished less than a second later in third with a time of 2:10.26.
Rom was the next Falcon to add points to the Orange and Brown efforts in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in second with a time of 2:25.27.
In her second race of the night, Waller found first-place success in the 500-yard freestyle. Waller set the pace in the 20-lap race, finishing in 5:06.21. Sophomores Megan Bomicino and Andrea Brown swam to fourth and sixth places, respectively.
The next event was the 100-yard butterfly where Falcons Vicky Yu and Sarah Burston touched in for second and third places. Yu captured second (57.58) while Burston raced into third (58.72).
One event later, Yu and Burston were back in the pool for the 400-yard IM, taking third (4:39.29) and fifth (4:42.02) places, respectively. Andrea Brown found time between the two to capture the fourth place spot with a time of 4:41.02.
The 800-yard freestyle relay race rounded out the afternoon of swimming, giving the Falcons one last chance to put points on the scoreboard; and that they did. The Orange and Brown 'A' and 'B' relay sqads swam to first (7:44.49) and third (7:59.60) place finishes. Making up the first place squad was Bennet, Waller, Akenberger and Richardson while Bomicino, Brown, and Harris swam in for third.
With four meets down, the BGSU women's swim team will be honing their skills in the pool over the course of the next month as they don't get back into MAC action until the Calvin Winter Invitational December 3-5.
