BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Less than one week after being promoted from the Manitoba Moose of the AHL to the National Hockey League affiliate Anaheim Ducks, former Bowling Green Falcon Dan Sexton struck gold twice on the way to scoring his first professional points and goals in a come-from-behind victory over the Dallas Stars Tuesday night, 4-3, in overtime.
In just his third NHL game, Sexton scored two third-period goals in the Ducks overtime win. His second goal tied the game with just over a minute remaining in the game before sending it into overtime.
At 6:08 in the third period, the Stars turned the puck over in their own zone and was picked up by Saku Koivu and fed to Bobby Ryan on the left wing. After Ryan hit the net and put a puck on Star goaltender Marty Turco, the rebound fell Sexton's way. Aware of the rebound and positioned on the post left of Turco, Sexton snapped one past the veteran goaltender for his first professional goal of his young career.
Down 3-2 to the Stars late in the third period, Sexton's day was not complete. After the Stars defense attempted to clear the puck out of their zone, Sexton stole the puck away in the neutral zone and made a solo charge to the Dallas net. Streaking down the nearside boards of the Honda Center, Sexton took a sharp angle in the corner before firing a wrist shot to the top-left corner of the net beating Turco again. With 1:02 remaining on the clock, Sexton scored the game-tying tally, unassisted.
The Ducks took the game into overtime and with a Koivu goal with less than a minute remaining in the overtime period.
In three games with the Ducks after being called to replace the injured Ducks forward Teemu Selanne, Sexton has been on the ice for a combined 42:23, averaging over 14 minutes per contest of ice time. His two goals and points in the game are his first of the season. He now has a +1 on-ice rating in his three games.
The Apple Valley, Minn. native signed a professional contract with the Ducks after playing the 2008-09 season with the Falcons and participated in Anaheim's training camp before being reassigned to the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League. After a short time with the Rampage, Sexton was relocated to the Ducks ECHL affiliate, Bakersfield Condors.
In two seasons with the Falcons, Sexton finished with 24 goals, 36 assists (60 points) and 18 multiple-point games in his collegiate career. In 2007-08, he scored seven goals and recorded 14 assists. He led the team in short-handed goals (3) and shared the team-lead for unassisted goals (2). In 2008-09, Sexton led the team in goals (17), assists (22) and points (39) with 24 PIM. He was tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (3) and finished second on the Falcons roster with five power-play goals and two short-handed goals. Sexton had at least one point in 24 games during the 2008-09 season with three multiple-goal games en route to earning All-CCHA Honorable Mention honors.
