TEMPE - Bowling Green State University sizes up with athletes around the country at the Sun Angle Classic. Three BGSU athletes would set new personal records at this non-scoring event.
"Overall I was very pleased with the way the athletes who competed stepped up to the level of competition," head coach Cami Wells said. "We had one more regional qualifier and several others that have the potential to meet a regional mark in the coming weeks."
One of the athletes who stepped up the level of competition was senior Whitney Hartman. She had already placed second on the first day of competition in the hammer throw. On the second day of the meet Hartman would set a new personal record in the shot put with a toss of 13.87 meters. Hartman would also compete in the discuss event where she would throw 44.74 meters placing 14th overall.
"Whitney Hartman had a very solid weekend in all three events and had a very strong showing in the Hammer Friday to finish 2nd in this type of meet is an accomplishment," said Wells.
Another athlete to set a new personal record at Arizona State University was senior Kara Butler. Butler would run a time of 17:28.24 and place 15th out of all the 5,000 meter competitors.
Sophomore Brittani McNeal also set a new personal record in the long jump with a distance of 5.70 meters. This would place McNeal sixth overall in this event. McNeal would also compete in the 200 meter dash where she would run a time of 26.11 seconds.
"Brittani McNeal did a great job of putting herself in position from her first jump in the long jump and earned a spot in the final," Wells said. "Britanni has been very consistent all year in the long jump and this was another big step."
In the shot put event senior TaKarra Dunning would once again have a regional qualifying distance of 14.73 meters. Dunning was placed in the premiere seeding for the shot put and placed eighth against some of the nations best shot put throwers.
Senior Jamie Roflow would also have a strong performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the Falcons. This was the first time Roflow, the current steeplechase record holder at BGSU, has run this event since her injury in almost two years.
The Falcons will be competing next weekend at the All-Ohio Championships at the University of Miami. The All-Ohio Championships will be a two day event with the best of Ohio competing.
