Bowling Green opens the season Aug. 28
Bowling Green, Ohio - When the Bowling Green volleyball team opens the 2009 season in late August, head coach Denise Van De Walle and her staff will have a highly touted group of freshmen to work with. PrepVolleyball.com named the class as a high honorable mention group in its yearly report of the top incoming freshman classes - one of only two Mid-American Conference schools to receive a ranking that high.
The class consists of three highly touted freshmen in Cassie Berning (6-0, Outside Hitter, Tipp City, Ohio), Kari Galen (6-2, Middle Blocker, Aurora, Ill.), and Allison Kearney (5-8, Setter, Wooster, Ohio). That trio will be added to a program that went 25-9 a year ago and 12-4 in MAC play, finishing second in the East Division. Van De Walle, who enters her 27th season at the helm, needs to just 13 wins to become the first coach in MAC history to win 500 in a career.
Bowling Green has won at least 20 games in three consecutive seasons and has gone 37-10 in MAC play during that time, the second best record in conference during that stretch.
PrepVolleyball.com ranks the Division I recruiting classes in three categories, picking the top 30 and then choosing the next 15 teams as highest honorable mention. The next 30 are picked as high honorable mention, which is where Bowling Green and Western Michigan were placed. The rankings were created by a panel of collegiate coaches from across the country, representing every major conference. The panel judges based on the cumulative impact the class could make in 4-5 years at each school..png&type=webp)
