Falcon Volleyball Team Recognized For Academic Excellence
July 27, 2009 | Volleyball
Lexington, Ky. – The Bowling Green volleyball team was awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the ninth consecutive season, maintaining a 3.30 cumulative grade point average for the 2008-09 school year.
Bowling Green was one of 71 NCAA Division I women's teams to receive the honor but the string of nine consecutive awards is the second longest in Division I. Overall, Bowling Green has been awarded ten times since the program was initiated for the 1992-93 academic year. In all, a record 409 teams were awarded at the collegiate and high school levels.
“It always amazes us when we get the report on the semester's outcome,” Bowling Green head coach Denise Van De Walle said. “The number of our athletes who maintain a 3.5 gpa or higher is quite impressive. There is a big commitment to academics in our program but it is unbelievable to think we've done this nine years in a row.”
The 2008 volleyball team went 25-9 overall, winning 20 or more matches for the third consecutive season. The Falcons went 12-4 in Mid-American Conference play and won tournament championships at the Temple Invitational and the Marquette Challenge. Over the past three seasons, Bowling Green has gone 37-11 in MAC play, the second-best mark during that stretch.
