LAST WEEKEND
The Falcons split a pair of matches last weekend ... BGSU endured a monsoon, a lightning delay and a late Indiana State surge to down the Sycamores, 2-1, Friday (Aug. 28) at Cochrane Field ... sophomores Alyssa Zuccaro and Megan Amann scored BG's goals, while true freshman Laura Arnold and redshirt freshman Becca Ison combined on the shutout in net ... Arnold stopped an ISU penalty-kick try late in the opening half for the first save of her career ... on Sunday (Aug. 30), Michigan State scored twice in the first 19 minutes en route to a 4-0 win over the Brown and Orange in East Lansing ... Arnold played the first half in net, while redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault played the second.
FALCON COACH ANDY RICHARDS
BGSU head coach Andy Richards, in his 10th season at the Falcon helm, is one of the most successful mentors in MAC women's soccer history ... Richards has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 94-86-19 ... BGSU is 10-5-5 in MAC Tournament matches during his tenure, and no MAC coach has as many trips to the league tourney's title game as Richards ... the 2007 season marked the fifth time he had guided a BG squad to the championship match ... two of those appearances – in 2004 and 2005 – resulted in MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Championships ... Richards and the Falcons also won the '05 regular-season crown ... BGSU reached an agreement with Richards on a two-year contract extension, in May of 2008 ... his contract now runs through June 30, 2011 ... Richards had inked a three-year contract in February of 2006, marking the first time in school history that a soccer coach had received a multi-year contract.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU is 1-2-0 on the young season ... the win came over Indiana State in the home opener (Aug. 28), while the losses both came on the road against Big Ten Conference teams – Ohio State and Michigan State ... sophomores Alyssa Zuccaro and Megan Amann lead the Falcons in scoring ... Zuccaro has three points on a goal and an assist, while Amann has one goal for two points ... seven different Falcons have started all three matches ... only one player, junior Alicia Almond, has played all 270 minutes this season to date ... sophomore Leah Johnson has played 254 minutes and Zuccaro 245 ... three different goalkeepers have seen action, with redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault having played 135 of the 270 minutes ... Arsenault has a team-high 12 saves and a goals-against average of 2.00 ... redshirt freshman Becca Ison also has a 2.00 GAA, in 45 minutes of work ... true freshman Laura Arnold has started two games, and has a 1-1-0 record and a 3.00 GAA ... head coach Andy Richards, in his 10th season in Northwest Ohio, welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's club that finished 12-6-4 overall and 6-3-2 in MAC action ... the '08 team's overall winning percentage of .636 was the second best in school history, and last year's club set a school record for fewest losses in a season.
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
Detroit is 1-0-0 on the young season ... the Titans opened the regular season on Wednesday (Sept. 2), with a 1-0 home win over Notre Dame (Ohio) College ... freshman Nina Carter scored UDM's goal, while sophomore Joanna Hinde picked up the shutout in goal ... the Titans had lost a pair of exhibition matches, to Madonna (3-1) and Saginaw Valley State (2-1) ... head coach Mike Lupenec, in his 17th season at the Titan helm, welcomed back 15 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's 8-9-1 team that went 4-4-0 in the Horizon League.
The Falcons trail Detroit, 4-2-0, in the all-time series between the teams, but BGSU won last year's meeting in BG ... the Brown and Orange posted a 4-0 win over the Titans last Sept. 19, with Katelyn Turner and Leah Johnson among the goalscorers, and Alexa Arsenault earning the shutout ... after allowing six goals in each of the first three meetings with UDM, the Falcons have won two of the last three matchups ... BG is 0-3-0 in games in the Motor City, including a 3-0 loss in the last trip to Detroit six years ago.
IPFW takes an 0-2-0 record into a Friday (Sept. 4) home match vs. Wright State ... the Mastodons opened the season with a 4-0 loss to Central Michigan (Aug. 22), then saw a match against another MAC team, Akron, cancelled due to lightning ... IPFW lost a 2-1 overtime decision at Youngstown State on Sunday (Sept. 30) ... freshman Lisa Underwood scored the Mastodons' goal, while soph Kristen McFadden has played both games in net, making a total of 10 saves ... head coach Margaret Saurin welcomed back 12 players from last year's 0-18-1 team ... the 'Dons have only three upperclass players on the 20-woman roster.
The Falcons lead IPFW, 1-0-0, in that series ... the only meeting came last year in Fort Wayne, with the Falcons posting a 4-0 win (Sept. 5, 2008) ... Alyssa Zuccaro scored her first collegiate goal in that match, while Stacey Lucas also found the back of the net ... Arsenault played nearly 77 minutes in goal to combine for the shutout.
Z FOR THREE
Sophomore Alyssa Zuccaro had three points in the win over Indiana State Friday (Aug. 28), with a goal and an assist ... she tied her career best, having also registered three points in last season's 4-0 win over Miami (Oct. 12, 2008) at Cochrane Field.
NOT A BAD DEBUT
Two Falcon goalkeepers made their respective collegiate debuts in Friday's win over Indiana State ... true freshman Laura Arnold worked a scoreless first half, making two saves, while redshirt freshman Becca Ison played the second 45 minutes and had six stops ... Arnold's first collegiate save was a memorable one, to say the least ... she saved an ISU penalty-kick attempt late in the first half.
HELPS TO GET ON THE BOARD EARLY
The Falcons scored early in each half of the win over Indiana State ... sophomore Alyssa Zuccaro found the back of the net just 4:53 into the first half, and assisted on classmate Megan Amann's goal just 1:47 into the second period ... believe it or not, neither goal cracked the BGSU top-10 list for fastest goal to begin a game or a half.
ALMOND A FIXTURE IN THE LINEUP
Junior Alicia Almond played a total of 207 minutes last season, and saw 235 minutes of action as a freshman in 2007 ... this year, Almond has played all 270 minutes through the first three matches ... after making a total of one start in her first two seasons, she has started all three matches this fall.
LOOKING TO EXTEND SOME IMPRESSIVE STREAKS
BGSU is looking to extend several streaks in 2009 ... last year, the Falcons finished with a winning record in MAC play for the fifth time in the 12-year history of the program .. after going 9-2-0 in league action in 2005, 7-4-0 in 2006, 6-5-0 in '07 and 6-3-2 last fall, the Falcons have posted four-straight winning MAC records for the first time ever ... BG's only other winning conference mark had come in 2002 (7-4-1) ... the '08 Falcons finished among the top-four teams in the MAC standings for only the fifth time (fourth in 2002, first in 2005, T-third in 2006, fourth in both '07 and '08) in school history, and the fourth-straight year ... overall, the Falcons have now posted five consecutive seasons of double-digit wins for the first time in school annals ... BG has had four-straight records of at least .500 for the first time ever.
FALCONS PICKED THIRD
The Falcons have been picked to finish third in the MAC in 2009, according to the preseason coaches poll released Aug. 20 ... Toledo was the coaches' choice to win the '09 MAC regular-season and tournament titles.
THE 2009 CAPTAINS
