Volleyball Team Holds Alumni Day And Recognizes 1989 MAC Champs

The Bowling Green volleyball program held its annual Alumni Day Saturday for its match against Buffalo and the program also recognized the 20-year anniversary of the 1989 volleyball team -- the first in program history to win a Mid-American Conference Championship.
The 1989 team went 20-11 and went a perfect 8-0 in MAC regular season play to capture the program's first league championship. After starting 2-7, the team won 15-of-16 matches, including a string of 10 in a row, to take home the conference crown.
"The anniversary celebration was wonderful," Volleyball Head Coach Denise Van De Walle said, who has coached 27 years at Bowling Green. "It's hard to believe 20 years have gone by already. It seems like just yesterday we won that championship. The day started off with a wonderful brunch at President Cartwright's home, followed by the volleyball match and then the Boise St. football game, where we were recognized on the field.
"We had 7 members of that 1989 team back and they looked the same to me. It was amazing. I have such incredible memories of that season. It was definitely one of the best of my career. I got to spend some quality time with a couple of them and it was wonderful."
