Falcons’ Win Streak Comes To An End
September 04, 2009 | Volleyball
New Orleans, La. – The Bowling Green volleyball team hit a season-low .096 and the Falcons lost to host New Orleans in three sets Friday night in the first match of the Radisson New Orleans Airport Privateer Invitational 25-16, 25-19, 25-22. The loss snapped the team's four-match win streak to start the 2009 season.
"UNO played a great match against us," Head Coach Denise Van De Walle, in her 27th season, said. "They are a bigger, more physical team that also played tremendous defense against us. We struggled from the first set with our passing and defense and that kept us from running our offense like we needed. They played extremely hard in front of a very loud, spirited crowd. It was a great environment -- unfortunately we didn't produce."
Bowling Green struggled from the outset, hitting just .033 in the first set and .077 in the second. New Orleans, on the other hand, took control of the match by hitting .367 in the opening set.
On the heels of a tournament MVP performance a week ago, Shari Luther led the Falcons with eight kills and four blocks. Emily Kauth added seven kills with a team best .333 attack percentage. Lauren Mizgalski had four blocks and Alex Zlabis had a team-high 11 digs. Freshman setter Allison Kearney handed out 28 assists and added seven digs.
New Orleans improves to 2-2 on the season with the win and Bowling Green falls to 4-1. The Falcons will play two more matches at the tournament Saturday, meeting Texas Tech at 1 p.m. and Southeastern Louisiana at 5 p.m.
