BGSU now idle until Feb. 12
The Bowling Green State University tennis team made quick work of Youngstown State University Sunday (Jan. 31), winning every match in a 7-0 victory over the Penguins. The non-conference dual was held at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-1 in dual-match play, and BGSU has won five-straight matches. YSU drops to 0-2 on the young season.
"This was a good match for us," said Falcon coach Penny Dean. "I think we had a lot of confidence entering today's match, after our win over IPFW last night and we were able to keep the momentum going against Youngstown State."
The Falcons won five singles matches and two doubles contests (not necessarily in that order), and BG won the sixth singles and third doubles matches by default, as YSU had only five available players.
In doubles action, junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston picked up an 8-1 win at the top singles flight, moving their record to 5-1 in dual-match play and 9-3 this year to date. Senior co-captain Katia Babina and freshman Jade Johnson captured a much more closely-contested match, winning in a tiebreaker to give the Falcons the doubles point.
In addition to doubles, Chiricosta and Eccleston each improved to 5-1 this spring in singles play. Chiricosta downed YSU's Margarita Sadovnikova by identical 6-3 scores at the top flight, while Eccleston lost only one total game in her sweep of Nicole Haralambopoulos in fourth-flight action.
Babina lost only two games in her match at the second flight, topping Anna Volkova in a 6-1, 6-1 verdict. Fellow senior co-captain Samantha Kintzel won in straight sets at the third flight, while freshman Katie Grubb did the same at flight number five. Both Kintzel and Grubb lost just five total games in their singles wins.
Babina and Kintzel are now each 4-2 in singles action this spring, while Grubb improved to 3-1. The Babina/Johnson doubles team is now 5-1 in dual matches.
The Falcons are now idle until Friday, Feb. 12, when BGSU hosts Detroit at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. First serve for that match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
